Meanwhile, In Longford

Longford Leader reports:

Gardaí are investigating the damage done to Granard Motte after a metre-wide hole was dug in the base of the structure in a possible attempt to steal from the site.

There are several myths attached to the national monument, with rumours that a castle or vast amounts of treasures are concealed within its hollow centre.

But, according to Granard Postmaster Pádraig McNamara, the chances of the perpetrators finding any buried treasure inside the well-known Granard heritage structure are slim.

“There’s nothing there that I’ve been aware of,” Mr McNamara told the Longford Leader on Tuesday morning.

“I don’t really know what is inside the Motte. I know excavations have been done before and, if there was anything there, it would have been excavated.”

From an archaeological point of view, in the practical sense, this is similar to throwing a stone at a passing bird in the hope it has some cash.

  2. Yeah, Ok

The bigger vandalism is all the religious crap that litters almost all of our ancient heritage sites.

      Agree,
Numerous modern crosses stuck up on mountains next to ancient stone burials and cirles

      Disagree.

Those crosses/statues are almost always removable, which is important. They rarely require major excavation. They are essentially like baubles on a Christmas Tree. Clearly, digging random holes into the base of monuments, removing contents and disturbing the site with no permission is “bigger vandalism”.

In fact, Christian symbols on hills/monuments etc are a further use of the site to reflect societial interests at the time. Just as sites have been used and reused for millenia. Where do you draw the line – not sure. But clearly digging a random hole into a monument is worse.

      1. Yeah, Ok

Almost every feature of our ancient and storied culture has been blighted by 19th and 20th century gaudy catholic knick-knacks imposed on the populace by the malevolent rulers of our cowed people, the catholic church. That we allowed the Vatican, a foreign power, to destroy and appropriate our culture and rub it in the faces of the people by insulting and debasing our historical monuments should be seen as a national embarrassment. The fact that it is common the world over does not excuse it either, before you say it.

Yeah. And those nasty Normans coming over here building their horrible castles. And don’t get me started on the Vikings and their cities.

My initial thought was ‘ethnic minority’ – until I saw the degree of work involved!! Go ahead, do your worst :-D
