Apple’s European headquarters in Cork
Ireland is being sued by the European Union authorities for failing to collect a year-old bill of as much as 13 billion euros ($15.3 billion) from Apple Inc. in a move that risks escalating tensions over the nation’s tax policies.
The European Commission on Wednesday referred Ireland to the European Court of Justice for failing to recoup the Apple bill…
…The dispute is part of a two-year-old crackdown by regulators on questionable tax deals — often involving American tech companies — throughout the EU. On Wednesday, Vestager also ordered Amazon.com Inc. to pay 250 million euros ($294 million) plus interest in back taxes to Luxembourg.
In the Irish case, until the money is recovered, Apple continues to get an illegal advantage, Vestager said.

It would be cheaper for the corrupt government officials who are paid by Apple not to collect the debt) to push for Irexit.
Expect none of that is true.
Costed out on the side of a bus.
The lengths the Irish establishment are willing to put the country through to protect literally anyone’s money but the people of Ireland.
Ireland won’t be getting this money. If/When apples pays the government, the EU countries where the sales will sue for their stake in the taxes collected, which is essentially all of it.
Even if that was the case, remind me again why the Irish state should expose itself to fines to defend Apple from this?
We’re the most craven, lickspittle country in Europe, but on this and ONLY this do we assert ourselves. It’s fupped.
So that every broadsheet article ever won’t end with ‘this from a country that has 15bn just lying around’ when its not actually the case?
Water charges: “We have to bill you, or Europe will be vewwy, vewwy angwy.”
Apple tax: “No Way! We Won’t Pay!”
No way, we WILL pay. They’re basically aiming for the taxpayer to pay fines so as to protect their daddy’s in Apple.
I was under the impression that the govt were due to get the payment from Apple, but that this was due to be held in escrow until the appeals process had been completed.
I was going to post the same! What gives?
That’s the impression that they want you to have. They’ve done nothing but launch an appeal against the ruling, they haven’t even set up an escrow account yet.
Officials haven’t completed step 1 of this process – to get the money in escrow, this is what Ireland is being sued for.
Any of you want to volunteer to hold the €17bn in escrow?
And the EU are just escrowing over it?
“Not a right wing government”
fighting hard for the rights of corporate tax dodgers everywhere, God bless them blushirts…
It’s not a government. It administers the country on behalf of large multinationals. More of a viceroy or regional branch manager.
Luxemburg ordered today to pay fines on sweetheart deal with Amazon. Juncker was prime minister . Oops.!!
Sounds to me that the Law and Order party is happy to break the law …. Im really confused …
