“Inside the rental truck, investigators found a handwritten note in which Saipov had declared his allegiance to the Islamic State, according to officials.”

Yes Memes, he was a Muslim. An Islamic fundamentalist nut job, an Islamist.

Islam and violence are linked, says top Indonesian cleric, Yahya Cholil Staquf.
General secretary of the Nahdlatul Ulama, which, with about 50 million members, is the top Muslim organisation in Indonesia.

      Don’t listen to to me.
      Listen to the Muslim cleric.

” Western politicians should stop pretending that extremism and terrorism have nothing to do with Islam. There is a clear relationship between fundamentalism, terrorism, and the basic assumptions of Islamic orthodoxy. So long as we lack consensus regarding this matter, we cannot gain victory over fundamentalist violence within Islam.

Radical Islamic movements are nothing new. They’ve appeared again and again throughout our own history in Indonesia. The West must stop ascribing any and all discussion of these issues to “Islamophobia.” Or do people want to accuse me — an Islamic scholar — of being an Islamophobe too? ”

    Hallowe’en is over…

It’s a day for sane people to rejoice and let their teenagers sleep off their first or second hangover.
    You have until 1pm, minimum.
It’s a lovely day for a bit of gardening.
You might feel the flutter of a butterfly fly by, wink wink.

    Hello Ladies…

The whole driving a truck into pedestrians is becoming a theme. “Allah Akbar” was what the driver shouted after/whilst he was being shot. He managed to kill 5 Argentinians, a Belgian and 2 New Yorkers as well as injure a dozen others. I’m not sure how, “God is Great” works into this scheme of things. It’s never going to go away is it? There are no demands from ISIS, Al Qaeda or whatever their banner, it appears they’re not overly keen on the infidel. So sorry New York.

I see what you did there, Mary. However, Micky wouldn’t condone driving a truck into Hill16 when the Dubs are playing. Moreover, could I re-iterate, I love Dublin, just not that keen on on the Jacks and Jackeens. I heart Dublin.

        1. Brother Barnabas

“just not that keen on on the Jacks and Jackeens” says the one who gets upset over being called a nordie

          you couldn’t stir the thickness

          1. Shayna

Hey Brother, the irony is I was born in Stillorgan, just happened my dad played for Tyrone in the late 50s. I’m actually quite nice, the one or two references to Dublin or the Dubs seem to follow me around. It’s, or at least I thought done in a rivalry type scenario. I love the Dubs – okay? Je suis eine Dubliner

        2. Mary Lambe

Haha come on now Shayna your blanket defence sheltering in safe haven in front of the square was unable to resist the Dubs carpet bombing this year

          1. Shayna

I do have to say, Dublin scored more against an under-powered Tyrone side. It was a somehow lacklustre Tyrone side. Okay Mulligan, “Mugsy” wasn’t there to deftly manoeuvre around the Dublin half-back line – but it wasn’t a great game. Seán Cavanagh was taken off way too early in my opinion. He may have a lot of miles on the clock, but he’ll still do the job.

          2. bertie blenkinsop

It must be 4 or 5 years since Mulligan played Inter County, sure that’s like blaming Liverpool’s recent form on Gerrard not playing

      1. Shayna

“Lone wolves” are by their nature unpredictable. It’s a tactic to frenzy-ise (I know it’s not a word) the majority of the World who want to live in peace.

Strange that the journal disabled comments on an article re. an act of terrorism. Are they really afraid of people speaking their mind?

      1. rotide

of course it could have been done.

Still might be. NZ won the 2011 one without being the recommended bid

        1. dav

SA will sue the bejusus off the IRB. The technical recommendations piece was brought in only after SA was screwed out of the 2011 and 2015 world cups

          1. rotide

            Screwed out of?

I’d much rather go to a world cup in a smaller stadium and nice town like rotarua than the soulless monstrosity in the middle of nowhere that is soccer city.

my heart goes out to all the innocent Muslims who will noe feel scrutiny and suspicious following this unfortunate incident. unfortunately this is part and parcel of living in a big city and we need to move on and put it behind us as soon as possible. We also need to see more being done to tackle hurtful & islamaphobic comments online.
