Congratulations to @RAE_Stephen. Journalism goes to the heart of who & what we are as Irish people. Fake news will only be combatted by strengthening & supporting quality journalism. This appt means Ireland is well placed in Europe to contribute to the debate on tackling fake news

From top: Stepehen Rae; Tweet from Minister for Communications Denis Naughton
Stephen Rae was invited by the commission to join the group, which will advise the European Commission on all issues in relation to the spread of false information across traditional and social media, and how to cope with the consequences.
The group’s first meeting will take place in Brussels next Monday.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr Rae said: “We have seen the widespread damage that can be done by the wilful dissemination of false information on social media platforms.
“I look forward to meeting and exchanging views with my colleagues on the Expert Group as we advise the European Commission on dealing with this complex challenge, which has major social and political consequences for citizens.”
INM chief appointed to EU expert group against ‘fake news’ (RTÉ)
A reminder of how garda puppets #PaulWilliams his boss @RAE_Stephen and INM led the media campaign of #FakeNews against brave whistleblower #MauriceMcCabe. How can @JunckerEU @EU_Commission stand over their @RAE_Stephen appointment? It is an insult to every citizen of the EU pic.twitter.com/SSlBmNC2ip

We need to find a balanced approach between the freedom of expression, media pluralism and a citizens' right to access diverse and reliable information.

Hmm.
very hard not to disagree with Gemma on this one. I know for a fact that the herald regularly use court stories that are up to six weeks old. as a daily paper, The courts stories used should be from the day before. is that not fake news…
Hardly a damning indictment Adolf. Unless you’re being sarcastic. Are you being sarcastic?
Its a daily newspaper, im not being sarcastic
…. it’s “old news” not fake news.
Jesus, was everyone dropped on their heads as babies?
Has youR account being hacked? I find myself agreeing with you.
How many apologies has Gerry Adams extracted from INM due to lies – fake news in other words?
they certainly seem to have an agenda with sf.
They clearly do, but that’s approved of by the establishment so…schuuush.
I find it very hard to take Gemma O’Doherty seriously any more since she suggested that Tony Blair may have had something to do with the disappearance of Madeline McCann because both he and Gerry McCann used to holiday there as children.

WOW did she go off piste with that one. Pissing her hard-won credibility up a wall.
that’s not what she said at all
she questioned why blair took such an interest in the mccann case “when 380 children go missing in the UK every year”. it’s a fair (but not all that interesting) question.
Then why did she bring Donegal into it at all? She is a conspiracy theorist who occasionally does good journalism.
(I left out the word ‘Donegal’ from my first post, apologies).
because her not-all-that controversial suggestion is that blair took added interest in the case because both families (his and the mccanns) have a connection to the same part of donegal – and when blair and gerry mccann, it came up in conversation
she’s accusing blair of giving preferential treatment to the mccanns (in terms of time, attention, allocation of police resources etc). I don’t think there’s any doubt he did… it was the big media story of the day and blair courted publicity and popularity.
that’s a long way from claiming he was involved in the child’s abduction
What conspiracy theories are you referring to Rob?

you’re all mad
yeah it is mad. just noticed it recently. I always have alook at people who like and retweet the ones I follow . it just looks like they set these accounts up to like their stuff . it’s a bit weird and doesn’t look good for what should be a serious magazine although they do pull a lot of stunts for attention. it looks really bad. the mccann case is just an example.
you’re mad
nah am sane as can be. Just wanted to know if they were fake accounts . i think they are.
Yours
No Water Charges
Gemma is spot on. Rae’s middle name is Fake.
They’re all about n on it. The Irish Times/ INM set. Surprised they didn’t appoint Anne Harris.
should have appointed johnny from broadsheet on the telly
he’d cut to the quick
Takes one to know one?
Top trolling by Denis Naughton to be fair.
Probably the best from Leinster House since the bould Bertie appointed Liam Lawlor (RIP) to vice chair of the House Ethics Committee.
The likes of Rea should be exposed in particular in relation to the penalty points
issue and the place to expose it is in the European Parliament.
There is also a need to expose the writing off of certain INM debts by Irish Banks
owned by the Government, is this not a form subsidy contrary to European Competition
Rules….who lobbied who to fill the position
