The spot where the body of a man was found this morning at Ryders Row, Dublin 1
The first of 2018…
“The man was found in a sleeping bag near Parnell Street. This death once again highlights the question of why someone would rather sleep on the streets than in emergency accommodation provided by the DRHE [Dublin Regional Housing Executive)
Trust in the hostel system is still a huge issue as many feel safer on the streets than they do in State-provided accommodation. When that is the case there are serious questions to be asked. It cannot be socially acceptable to go into another year of people dying on our streets.”
Statement from Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH), this morning.

People make choices for a number of reasons,
For example the chap found dead outside Leinster house was found dead in Dublin but the reality is he owned property’s in Kilkenny. He didn’t need to live as he did,
We can put support services in place, but we can’t force people to use them.
I feel better about that death now, thanks.
Yes. I’ve heard all homeless people are millionaires..
Youre all heart
to be expected from a blushirt..
“People make choices for a number of reasons”
Victim blaming.
Stop using that old line that some people choose sleeping rough as a lifestyle. They don’t.
Homeless people don’t want to live with homeless people.
Stunning.
Any other gems there Cian?
Our taxes are paying for shelters for rough sleepers to use. These are either ‘wet’ (allow drink/drugs) or ‘dry’.
Some people won’t go to the dry shelters because they want to take drugs. But won’t go to a wet shelter because of the drug users.
So what should we do? How much more resources should we, as a society, divert from schools and hospitals to help these people?
You’re making a lot of allegations there, can you back them up with some actual facts?

i think everyone should keep their opinions to themselves on this. nobody knows this person’s circumstances or reasons to be out rough. we should afford the guy some dignity and not turn his death into a political crusade or a judgement on the moral failings of the homeless.
nicely said Sir

You always speak very well on this topic. Measured and thoughtful, as usual.
In other news… Government congratulates itself as homeless figures decrease.
Sure, a real human being died, but at least they got to be punchline for your dig at the government, amirite?
well the government will pull out all the stops to bail out corrupt banks or fight against corporate tax bills, but they don’t seem to bothered about the homeless crisis, eh?
You mean except for the billions they spend each year housing people?
Fine Gael is ignoring all social crises in Ireland.
it wouldn’t look good at Davos if they did…
