      Well I do
      As it happens

Haven’t seen the Shape of Water
So I’ll reserve the best fillum and best director

But couldn’t agree more with Frances getting the nod over Saoirse’s Ladybird
      Same with Sam Rockwell
There was only ever one winner in the best supporting Actress yer one from the West Wing

      And delighted for Gary Oldman
      Well earned imo

        1. Frilly Keane

          I didn’t say that
If she’d a won I would be proud of her and say fair play, one of our own like

but no one could compete with Frances’ Mildred Hayes
          imo anyway
she owned that script and fillum from the opening title
the same can’t be said for anyone else on that shortlist

          1. Cian

I love the way you say “fillum”.

it’s so much better than the awful grating word “moo-vee” **shudders**

          2. Frilly Keane

            Ha
Paddies can’t say Moovee in a way that doesn’t sound like a ridiculous Mid Atlantic accent
            like those O’Reilly heirs

            tis Fillum
and going t’de Pick’tures or de’ Flix in this house
            is what we do
            well I do anyway

            yer’wan does be mortified

          3. Frilly Keane

            ah I’m sure there is
just haven’t come across any I can’t fake or blaggard me way out’ve

            maybe Starwars

          4. bertie blenkinsop

            Don’t talk about Star Wars….
I’ve spent the past few “snow days” being grilled by my youngest with all manner of Star Wars questions and I’ve never seen the films.
It was like Guantanamo bay at times.

          5. Neilo

@Bertie: weather’s a little better in Gitmo, mind. Every one of those new Star Wars films need at least 45 minutes cut out of them; I visibly aged during The Last Jedi.

          6. bertie blenkinsop

I don’t believe that for a moment Neilo, it’s not for nothing you’re known as Broadsheet’s Benjamin Button….

    1. DeKloot

Agreed. Not enough ‘splosions for many tho. And perhaps too much nuance and subtly for others.

      1. papa p

Ah I see. I thought it was rubbish because it is “perhaps too much nuance and subtly for others”.

        Jaysus.

    2. Frilly Keane

      tis
I loved Laurie Metcalf (the mam) in it

we don’t see her enough on the big screen
so she is still suffering the Rosanne’s sister hangover

      1. newsjustin

Hardly, she recently win a Tony and is Oscar Nominated. I’d love that kinda hangover.

  1. Frilly Keane

btw if we want to talk about lads been overlooked
    Martin McDonagh was robbed

and he’s as good as one of our own

    1. De Kloot

Genuinely can’t complain with Jordan Peele’s award as that script and story was spectacular. Martin was definitely robbed of a nomination for best director and by extension the Oscar itself for same.

      1. Frilly Keane

        I won’t argue
only to add that Martin’s premise and characters , particularly how they blended together, were far more unique

        one thing tho’
it shows it can still be done

        original screenplays

  2. Bort

Shape of Water = the bastard child of Amelie and Hell Boy. Easily one to leave before the end.

      1. mildew st. meadowlark

        Me too.

I was very surprised by how much I loved it. Sally Hawkins is a wonderful actress.

  3. Friscondo

It’s ridiculous to suggest McDormand reprised Fargo performance. Have seen Three Billboards and rewatched Fargo a few days ago. They’re entirely different characters and performances. BTW, Margot Robbie would have won any other year. She was fantastic in I Tonya, another great movie.

    1. manta rae

Agree totally. I wonder if the person who tweeted this nonsense has even watched Fargo.

Not seen Ladybird, but – McDormand’s and Rockwell’s performances aside – Three Billboards is massively overrated in my humble opinion.

If it had won Best Picture, then the Coen Brothers should have been the ones on stage collecting the award.

    2. rotide

Does no one else find it strange that I, Tonya has done so well in the MeToo climate? It’s a film that’s literally about the attempted murder of a woman that completely excuses the perpetrator.

  4. francis almond

I hate Saoirse Ronan and her “I’m just an average girl from Dublin’ act. So I’m delighted

    1. Neilo

That ‘story?’ accent is more played out than Mario Rosenstock’s high-larious bits on Today FM.

          1. Neilo

Aye, mildred: I was a bit cheeky about Saoirse Ronan and felt bad about it afterwards but I apologized to you in error rather than to Clampers. That wee lassie’s a hell of a thesp.

    2. rotide

It really is fascinating how far people will go to find something to begrudge succesful Irish people for.

Bono never had a chance when ‘Her accent is just so fake’ and ‘Her sketches that she didn’t write weren’t funny’ are a reason to despise a talented actress.

    3. Teresa

You “hate” her? “Hate”? Really? You know her or you’re just a very unhappy person?

    4. Matt Lucozade: The Only Reader of the Village

She’s not from Dublin. She couldn’t drive a JCB into a LIDL even with John Connors as driving instructor. SHe might be OK at the ploughing championships though; being a bogger and all.

  5. f_lawless

I see Al Qaeda’s PR front in Syria only got a nomination this year rather than winning an Oscar outright like last year. The times we live in!.

      1. f_lawless

john pilger, one of world’s foremost investigative journalists, whos been around long enough to have seen it all, is connected to infowars? Sure nigel

          1. f_lawless

So, ex- British ambassador to Syria turned whistleblower, Peter Ford, who refers to various videos uploaded by the White Helmets as “literally provided by the jihadists themselves”, is also part of some misinformed Infowars gang – in Nigel’s mind at least.
F minus for that contribution Nigel. If you’re going to comment on something, do some research first. Lazy smear attempts just won’t do.

          2. jusayinlike

Nigel, the leader of the white helmets and Oscar winner was not even allowed into the US to accept his trophy as he’s on the NSA terrorist watch list..

          3. f_lawless

Looking past the moronic putdown attempts, I uploaded this recent interview with ex-ambassador Peter Ford, for anyone that wasn’t aware of him and might be curious to hear what he has to say. I would say his is an important voice regarding the true nature of the Syrian conflict – having a unique insight as both a former British government insider and as someone who has lived among Syrians for years. https://soundcloud.com/f_lawless/peter-ford-interview-western-media-coverage-in-syria-28-02-18

          4. Nigel

I dunno. Where does these guys stand on Pizzagate? On fake shootings and crisis actors? Are we at the level where white helmet guys are putting people in holes so they can be filmed dragging them out? That kind of thing?

(Wow, jusayinlike invoking a US security agency in an appeal to authority, who would have thought?)

          5. Nigel

I can’t or won’t keep track of what you conspiracy chuckleheads are spouting at any given time – is the current bumf that Ghouta isn’t being bombed and civilians aren’t being slaughtered by Russian-supplied jets?

          6. f_lawless

I think that’s what you call cognitive dissonance. Rather than even consider the voice of an ex-British ambassador to Syria, you get inane dismissive putdowns about “Pizzagate”.

I realise it’s unsettling and upsetting to consider – and that emotional responses are to be expected rather than a proper critical examination – but if one is to have a firmer grasp of what’s going on in the world, you have to break free from the more reassuring, cotton-wool notion that our own governments in the West wouldn’t seek to condition our world view via corporate media in order to carry out callous acts – “manufactured consent” it’s been called.

I think you’re showing your naivety Nigel if you really think it’s a ridiculous notion that we could be being subjected to war propaganda in the modern era.

Regarding those WH videos, the Swedish Doctors for Human Rights, for example is a respected NGO which, after examining the life-saving procedures in some of the videos, have deemed them to be “incorrect – in fact life-threatening – or seemingly fake, including simulated resuscitation techniques being used on already lifeless children”. http://swedhr.org/

Occasionally you do get glimpses of truth on Syria in corporate media. Maybe this is more palatable for you Nigel? An important 2016 article by Irish journalist Patrick Coburn: http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/syria-aleppo-iraq-mosul-isis-middle-east-conflict-assad-war-everything-youve-read-could-be-wrong-a7451656.html

          7. f_lawless

and no I don’t think civilians aren’t dying in E. Ghouta but are you even aware that the terrorists that have been holding E.Ghouta hostage are also firing rockets onto civilians in nearby Damascus for years now? (something that’s never really mentioned in Corporate media). The same terrorists who parade citizens of religious minorities there around in cages to act as human shields. http://abcnews.go.com/International/syrian-rebel-group-parades-civilians-cages-deter-regime/story?id=34940990
Calls for a lengthy ceasefire in E. Ghouta by certain UN representatives, according to Peter Ford, would only allow the terrorists time to re-arm and re-group and then we would be back to square one. According to him, “any true humanitarian should wish for a swift military end to the affair to bring the Syrian citizens suffering to an end as soon as possible” . That is the harsh reality.

          8. Nigel

More substantively: killing lots of civilians now so we don’t have to kill them later is a fantastically humanitarian argument but I’m naive.

        1. f_lawless

“killing lots of civilians now so we don’t have to kill them later is a fantastically humanitarian argument but I’m naive.”
Naive or not very bright. Let me try and spell out the argument Peter Ford is making because you seem to have a terrible grasp on it or want to purposely misrepresent it::- For years, various terrorist factions have been holding the civilians of E. Ghouta hostage under barbaric conditions (eg. parading them in cages as I linked to earlier, firing on any civilian who tries to leave the suburb). These same terrorists have been firing missiles daily onto civilians living in nearby Damascus for a number of years now, killing several hundred at this point.
Time and time again, these terrorist factions have scuppered attempts to broker a ceasefire arrangement. Now the Syrian government, backed by Russian forces, have had to come to the harsh conclusion that enough is enough, this situation can’t go on; the only viable solution left is to aim for a swift military one.
Those leading the calls in the UN for a lengthy ceasefire are in fact cynically claiming to do so on the pretext of humanitarian grounds when the truth is they are hoping to prolong the suffering of the Syrian people by bolstering the position of the terrorists in the hope that the increased suffering caused would eventually turn the tide of popular support against Assad and effect regime change (which has been their objective all along). That is Peter Ford’s considered opinion.
By the way, another thing that shows your naivety is your quickness to sneer at anyone who views western corporate media coverage on affairs in the ME with a sceptical eye. Has it been so long that you’ve forgotten the WMD debacle, where UK media whipped up a frenzy of fear among the public in order to “manufacture consent” for the utterly disastrous invasion of Iraq? Maybe you’re too young to remember. I don’t know.

      2. rotide

Just so I’m up to speed, what are the white helmets? Some modern version of Black Helicopters?

give me a tldr please and not a youtube link.

          1. Ami B and BS

LOL comment appears 8 hours later!

I can see you’re a highly valued member of the broadsheet community jusbs

          2. Nigel

Does this newfound faith in US security agencies mean you’re now concerned about Russian interference in the US election?

  6. david

    White helmets by day terrorists
By night digging out the human flesh body armour and using it as propaganda

  7. Matt Lucozade: The Only Reader of the Village

IN fairness, with Al Porter off the scene, it won’t be long before the auditions for the Olympia panto will be on.

She can go back to the Carlow accent now if the the Fair City walk-on part tanks. Worked for Kathryn Thomas….

  8. Matt Lucozade: The Only Reader of the Village

In Fairness to Saoirse, she’s a good actress who has not endorsed the burning down of a LIDL. So she’s a winner in my book, of sorts. Except for being from Carlow by way of the uncool side of the U.S.
