      But couldn’t agree more with Frances getting the nod over Saoirse’s Ladybird
      Same with Sam Rockwell
      There was only ever one winner in the best supporting Actress yer one from the West Wing

      And delighted for Gary Oldman
      Well earned imo

            I’ve spent the past few “snow days” being grilled by my youngest with all manner of Star Wars questions and I’ve never seen the films.
            It was like Guantanamo bay at times.

      Genuinely can’t complain with Jordan Peele’s award as that script and story was spectacular. Martin was definitely robbed of a nomination for best director and by extension the Oscar itself for same.

    It’s ridiculous to suggest McDormand reprised Fargo performance. Have seen Three Billboards and rewatched Fargo a few days ago. They’re entirely different characters and performances. BTW, Margot Robbie would have won any other year. She was fantastic in I Tonya, another great movie.

      Not seen Ladybird, but – McDormand’s and Rockwell’s performances aside – Three Billboards is massively overrated in my humble opinion.

      If it had won Best Picture, then the Coen Brothers should have been the ones on stage collecting the award.

            I think that’s what you call cognitive dissonance. Rather than even consider the voice of an ex-British ambassador to Syria, you get inane dismissive putdowns about “Pizzagate”.

            I realise it’s unsettling and upsetting to consider – and that emotional responses are to be expected rather than a proper critical examination – but if one is to have a firmer grasp of what’s going on in the world, you have to break free from the more reassuring, cotton-wool notion that our own governments in the West wouldn’t seek to condition our world view via corporate media in order to carry out callous acts – “manufactured consent” it’s been called.

            I think you’re showing your naivety Nigel if you really think it’s a ridiculous notion that we could be being subjected to war propaganda in the modern era.

            Regarding those WH videos, the Swedish Doctors for Human Rights, for example is a respected NGO which,after examining the life-saving procedures in some of the videos, have deemed them to be “incorrect – in fact life-threatening – or seemingly fake, including simulated resuscitation techniques being used on already lifeless children”. http://swedhr.org/

Ghouta but are you even aware that the terrorists that have been holding E.Ghouta hostage are also firing rockets onto civilians in nearby Damascus for years now? (something that’s never really mentioned in Corporate media).             Calls for a lengthy ceasefire in E. Ghouta by certain UN representatives, according to Peter Ford, would only allow the terrorists time to re-arm and re-group and then we would be back to square one. According to him, “any true humanitarian should wish for a swift military end to the affair to bring the Syrian citizens suffering to an end as soon as possible” . That is the harsh reality.

          Naive or not very bright. Let me try and spell out the argument Peter Ford is making because you seem to have a terrible grasp on it or want to purposely misrepresent it::- For years, various terrorist factions have been holding the civilians of E. Ghouta hostage under barbaric conditions (eg. parading them in cages as I linked to earlier, firing on any civilian who tries to leave the suburb). These same terrorists have been firing missiles daily onto civilians living in nearby Damascus for a number of years now, killing several hundred at this point.
          Time and time again, these terrorist factions have scuppered attempts to broker a ceasefire arrangement. Now the Syrian government, backed by Russian forces, have had to come to the harsh conclusion that enough is enough, this situation can’t go on; the only viable solution left is to aim for a swift military one.
          Those leading the calls in the UN for a lengthy ceasefire are in fact cynically claiming to do so on the pretext of humanitarian grounds when the truth is they are hoping to prolong the suffering of the Syrian people by bolstering the position of the terrorists in the hope that the increased suffering caused would eventually turn the tide of popular support against Assad and effect regime change (which has been their objective all along). That is Peter Ford’s considered opinion.
          By the way, another thing that shows your naivety is your quickness to sneer at anyone who views western corporate media coverage on affairs in the ME with a sceptical eye. Has it been so long that you’ve forgotten the WMD debacle, where UK media whipped up a frenzy of fear among the public in order to “manufacture consent” for the utterly disastrous invasion of Iraq? Maybe you’re too young to remember. I don’t know.

    In Fairness to Saoirse, she’s a good actress who has not endorsed the burning down of a LIDL. So she’s a winner in my book, of sorts. Except for being from Carlow by way of the uncool side of the U.S.
