The first images of Aidan Gillen as Irish comedy great Dave Allen have been released ahead of the screening of the biopic Dave Allen at Peace on RTÉ One next month.

Dave Allen at Peace airs on RTÉ One on Easter Monday, April 2, at 9:30pm and explores “how Dave’s comedy genius was shaped by the tragic loss of his father, his brother… and his finger.

The hour-long drama sees Tommy Tiernan play Allen’s father, Cully, with Gillen’s Game of Thrones co-star Conleth Hill playing Allen’s brother, John.

Commissioned by the BBC in association with RTÉ, Dave Allen at Peace was written by Stephen Russell, whose credits include We’re Doomed: The Dad’s Army Story and Peaky Blinders. It is directed by Father Ted and Quacks director Andy De Emmony.

Well he was in The Morbegs. Anyhow, Dave Allen was a highlight of comedy in the 70/80s, a man out of time. ..even his last show in the ’90s was pretty good.

Dave Allen was a really funny guy, I used to love watching his show when I was a kid.

For me, Tiernan wasn’t great in Derry Girls – in fairness, it’s all but impossible to go toe-to-toe with Ian McElhinney – but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt here.

And could it be the rest of the cast also starred in love hate
He might look like Dave Allen but can he truly portray him.
His part in game of thrones was mediocre
Dave Allen was possibly the greatest stand up comedian ever produced from this country
I remember the funeral sketch the dancing pope and the hit put on him for that by the IRA

I hope Gillen doesn’t overcook it with his performance, as he has the occasional habit of doing.

Dave Allen was great though, this should be a good show.

Good that there will be more love love for Dave Allen. He seems to be the lost note in British and Irish Comedy heritage.

I’d have a man crush on him, were he still alive today. A top wit!

Not sure Aiden’s voice will be right for Allen… sure we’ll see. I’ll definitely watch this :)
