      I dunno…. what about the NAACP in the US? Also, the now common use ‘POC’ acronym.

      If the phrase “person of colour” or simply ‘POC’ was used, would that be acceptable? Open question…

        “Colored” was a pejorative term used by white people to describe former slaves beginning in the “Jim Crow” era, it’s certainly not a phrase you would hear in common usage today.

        It was explicitly used in a loaded way ffs. The question asks if the colour of his skin should somehow influence his candidacy. Cmon.

            Trying and miserably failing. I am sorry but in this day and age, I just cannot see how someone can, for one second, think it in any way a remotely valid point or selection criteria when determining someone’s ability to do something. Skin colour is so irrelevant, it’s not even worth mentioning. He is a councilor, not some ill-educated octogenarian cradling a pint in Kerry. The bar seems to be very low when it comes to standards in office here of late. Between this galoot and the Healy Raes and Lowrys of the country, you can see why people regard politicians with so little respect.

            OK. Let’s work from there. Let’s imagine he asked him “Is it time for a *black* President?” Is that quite patronising, mildly racist as you put it? Like fook it is. It’s blatantly ignorant and overtly racist. And all made worse in the context of how he tee’d up his question. He’s a meatsack full of hateful bile.

            jaysus – do you really believe that? It seems to me more the case that he is a well-meaning enough oul lad who isn’t particularly up-to-date with the more correct terminology, and that’s it.

            – he looks to be in his 60s (at least), and is Carlow really that much more cosmopolitan than Kerry? There are plenty of examples of people being actually hateful to people of other races to be outraged about, rather than well-meaning, but insensitive, faux pas…

    surely we’re the first country to have both a gay president and gay person of colour taoiseach. we’d really need a trans person of colour president to be the talk of the town.

    The US has had a sizeable black population for at least 200 years, it was well past time they had a black president.

    The UK has had a sizeable black population for at least 70 years, it’s well past they have have a black PM

    We have had a sizeable (and that is really really stretching the term) black population for about 20 minutes. It’s not like generations of people of color have been clammoring for civil rights here. Not saying we shouldn’t have a black president, I’m sure Kev would knock Duffy into a cocked hat. It’s just that it’s not a ‘thing’ like say repealing the 8th was and trying to claim it is just seems like virtue signalling in the extreme (I know how much people round these parts love that phrase)

    Talking of coloured and president there’s a poll out today showing a big uptick in the approval ratings of Donald Trump amongst American blacks thanks mainly to more of them being in work than at any time since records began.
    Today’s Trump approval ratings among black voters: 31% This day last year: 18%
    Not that you’ll read about this in any newspapers tomorrow.
