Minutes ago.

In a procedural vote.

The US Senate voted to advance US President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to a final floor vote by 51-49.

The final vote will take place tomorrow.

The Guardian’s live feed notes:

A yes today may be a no tomorrow. Or it might stay a yes…

Last week, research psychologist at Palo Alto University in Northern California Christine Blasey Ford told a senate committee that a drunk Brett Kavanaugh groped her and tried to take her clothes off at a party in the 1980s, when she was 15.

Ford said she was pinned down on a bed when this happened and that Kavanaugh put his hand over her mouth to stop her from screaming.

Kavanaugh denies the allegation.

Whatever about the accuracy of the allegations, his performance during the hearing was hardly worthy of a seat on the Supreme Court.

But in an editorial, the Washington Post called on senators not to endorse Mr Kavanaugh. It was the first time the newspaper has opposed a supreme court nominee since 1987. In particular, the newspaper’s editorial board highlighted his comments during his testimony last week in which he said he was the victim of an “orchestrated hit” motivated by anger at President Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 election and revenge on behalf of the Clintons.

“He provided neither evidence nor even a plausible explanation for this red-meat partisanship, but he poisoned any sense that he could serve as an impartial judge,” the editorial said.

Trump’s America – the greatest show on earth – just keeps rolling along.

    Status of snowflake meltdown: Happening.

  2. realPolithicks

The republicans have demonstrated once again that they lack any kind of moral compass, this nominee just like the person who nominated him is unfit for office.

  3. johnny

    – Collins just announced she will vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh, all but assuring his confirmation to the Supreme Court-

    On the brighter side

Unfortunately, whatever the outcome, this will invigorate Trump voters in the run-up to the Mid-Terms.

    Sometimes you just can’t win.

    1. Johnny

Nah getting what you want dissipates that, what it has done is angered and invigorated the dems-Collins will lose her seat over this.

    2. In The Skies

Someone like Collins will surf into port on a board.
      A board of directors position.
      . A token post.
It’s all set up… These people don’t need no re-election….

It’s not actually that difficult to understand.
      It’s difficult to observe.

      This whole thing is ridiculous.
Tho only important thing to Republicans is that he’s extremely PRO-Corporate.
The Democrats have their hands tied, because most of them are PRO-Corporate too.

      It’s not funny.

Collins had finished her speech less than an hour later and former Obama official Susan Rice and the Speaker of the Maine House, Sara Gideon, were announcing and planning a 2020 Maine Senate bid.

        1. jusayinlike

Susan Rice whose being investigated by the house judiciary committee for perjury amongst other things..

  5. McVitty

Eh, of all I would say Dems have shown their moral compass in all this – and I don’t see how morality comes into how reps and dems operate….it’s like defending McDonald’s over Burger King here…come on.

this is worth a read: https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/09/kavanaugh-nomination-battle-like-orwells-1984/

All this talk of “performance” is so despicable – in the hearing, it was suggested he was partying his way through school and what they got was a raw response to such a vicious attack on truth and character. I would forgive him for responding with flared nostrils and setting the record straight with all the positive things he did during his final year in school – but at that point, what he says doesn’t matter, all that matters is what the camera got.

At this point the only thing worse than Kavanaugh not getting the job is Kavanaugh getting the job…a bit like the poor girl who beat Serena Williams recently….

    1. In The Skies

All that typing… With nothing to say, saying nothing…

Is this a new strategy by your bosses or are you paid by the word?

      Read 1984 again.
      – I don’t think you understood it the first time.
      – I don’t think the person who wrote the article you linked to did either..
      – It wasn’t written by Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart y’know..?

      1. McVitty

if you say so…you seem to know best – I only read it three times myself.

What would you say 1984 was about again? Something to do with power and authoritarianism? Something to do with party loyalty? Something to do with breaking people with propaganda? Something to do with subversion of truth? Relevant here? – nah, probably not.

        https://www.gradesaver.com/1984/study-guide/themes

Unlike you, I don’t have a side or feel the need to choose one, and if I lean, I lean cautiously…

          1. McVitty

eh, everyone’s judgement tends to fall on some side or other…you know, like a member of the jury having to make a judgement call.

What am I making up? What does nobody care about?

And McVitty has nothing to do with biscuits. Are you a Peter Green fan? I have that on CD.

          2. In The Skies

like a member of the jury having to make a judgement call

Yeah, like a proven self-proclaimed member of a puking club who calls it farting under oath in front of a Senate Judiciary Committee, or an advocate of the brand new ‘drinking-game’ called ‘Devil’s Triangle’ that everyone else thought was about drugging girls and having threesomes without their consent

The ‘man’ is a proven liar. He proved it himself.
He has one qualification and that’s his allegiance to Trump.

            Anti- Women
            Pro-Corporate
            Bully
            Sexual predator
            Bad Actor…

-Guess which one I’m talking about?

And don’t tell me I have an agenda.
I hate the Democratic Party even more for being such wimps.
            They allowed all of this.

I just see the absurdity of it all.

  6. In The Skies

    PS.
I like biscuits, but I’m not as fat as Ollie.
My only point was in reference to the American System and how it doesn’t work anymore.

Any chance you could get me a job or three?
    – A few shillings?

    1. McVitty

No system operating at that level is capable of representing its citizens, nevermind agreeing truth. It is only capable of mass subversion/distraction and deep loyalty demands – as the Kavanaugh case demonstrates.

If people don’t want a constitutional conservative or anyone put forward by Trump – that’s not great thing to have to admit but better than destroying a man for political ends – playing with peoples emotions, dividing people further. Watching the hearings reveals a low point – and check out this analysis of Ford’s testimony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGxr1VQ2dPI

There are two sides and we should care for both – this is what all my empty words were trying to say.

      You won’t find a shill here either…

      1. Verbatim

Agree with your take and interesting links. The live recording of all this was in itself shocking to any right minded human.

      2. Nigel

Trump appointed a conservative to the Supreme Court just over a year ago and nobody tried to destroy his life. The should have gone exactly the same way except that a woman accused him of attempted rape. Apparently we’re still.more worried about possible perpatrator’s reputations than alleged victim’s traumas. Screw this both-sideism.

        1. Verbatim

Exactly “possible perpetrator and alleged victim” there are two sides to this… so which underdog do you want to screw?

          1. Nigel

The idea that the man groomed and fastracked into an incredibly powerful lifelong position by the party that controls all three branches of the U.S. government is an underdog of any description underlines an astonishing disconnect.
