While John Lewis and the other shops prepares to woo people with big-budget ads about inflatable shoes or a talking Christmas brick or whatever, the supermarket Iceland (it hasn’t gone away you know) takes the opportunity to draw attention to rampant deforestation and the global demand for palm oil, which is destroying orangutan habitats. Co-produced with Greenpeace, voiced by Emma Thompson.
“Banned” is a strong word, but it seems UK body Clearcast declined to clear it for broadcast due to its political messaging, in breach of the UK’s Broadcast Code of Advertising Practice.
And that”s why mum’s gone to Iceland.
FIGHT!
Iceland’s Christmas TV advert banned for being too political (The Guardian)

When I watched it I said that’s a very English ad, those Icelandics are great for their bi-lingual ads. Anyway, the supermarket, I know now. #savethemonkeys
This is getting lots of coverage.
Call me a cynic, but I think they knew they’d get banned and now people will want to see it.
I thought, within reason, ads an be shows and complaints then made?
This seems to have gone to a screening agency first who advised them it would break the broadcasting code.
Interesting take on a Christmas ad, and I think a good message.
On a slightly related note, a while ago The ‘Sheet posted an interesting little whose father encouraged her dreams of being an astronaut. I see another ad using a very similar theme and plot line, but not quite as dark as the original gem. I wonder if it is a case of plagiarism, or the original artist working for the ad agency
Sorry, cannot currently recall either the ad or the name of the ad company or the original post (one of the ‘You Might Like This series)
Ah, found the original post! In the Animation thread. Duh!
Well worth another look
