Proper Charlie Flanagan – financing Callinan legal costs. They will never stop trying to kick the daylights out of Maurice McCabe.

Thought the look on Angela Merkel said it all. What a leader. To remember a surrender which led to Versailles which directly led to the rise of Hitler, and WW2 and the partition of Germany, with Angela living her life in the darkened East. Yet, she has the resources and vision to reach out to her French counterpart.

As for us Irish, remember the lives of those killed and wounded, but also the fact that Britain militarily freed up one front on this day in 1918 and was able to concentrate better on another front in our country. I suppose if I was remembering my relatives on this day, I’d have an expression like Merkel’s. But happily, if you can call it that, I don’t, so beyond a review of the papers and a comment on Broadsheet, it’s a transitory glance at history before returning to the present.

Powerful stuff from a sun-dappled Cenotaph this morning.
The German President laying a wreath for the first time,Nimrod always a stirring piece of music,10,000 veterans from all faiths, creed and colour gathering to march ( 17,000 applied ),civilians who played their part keeping the home fires burning while the boys were off fighting a tyrant.
And the Irish Ambassador laying a wreath as an annual reminder of the bravery and sacrifices of Irishmen who faced hostility at home but recognised the dangers abroad.
    We shall remember them.

well said, charger (your sensitive side is a thing of immense beauty)

let’s hope that the despicable conduct (yet again) of donald trumpf hasn’t marred or soured the event for the many millions for whom it means so much

If by ‘tyrant’ you mean the Kaiser – he wasn’t alone in fairness: all of the empirical forces and alliances were up for a good scrap.
Dignified ceremonies all round today. I liked Macron’s speech. Plus the inclusion of civilians at the London Cenotaph was a really apt gesture.
Trump cancelled a cemetery visit in France because of the rain. Putin then strides out without an umbrella. Politicians, eh? Respect and remembrance to the soldiers, nurses and civilians that died because of their blunders.

Does anyone know when the Brexit deal is actually scheduled to go to the HP vote? They are resigning or threatening to resign all over the place. Hard to keep up with it all.

True but it must be close when so many are threatening to walk. As an MP it is one thing to be in support of leave but once the blow back starts, quite another to be known as being instrumental in it.

Meanwhile scientists have begun a study to determine if the reason Trumps hair has defied all explanation to date may be that it is really a bundle of cotton candy .

Cop yourself on about war, chum.

In Extremis: The Life of War Correspondent Marie Colvin

Lindsey Hilsum’s compelling biography is a tribute to the courageous and inspiring journalist who sought always to bear witness to the brutal truths of war. Read by Juliet Aubrey.
