“Joe Schmidt may well be the worst coach/selector in Irish rugby history” – George Hook, 30/5/16.

That still his opinion? You do realise its OK to be wrong. Imagine how boring it would be if everyone was afraid to give an opinion for fear of being wrong.

Yes I realise it’s OK to be wrong. I just enjoy when rugby pundit George’s guff is exposed for the nonsense that it is. That quote was after Joe had coached Leinster to two Heineken Cups and a Challenge Cup. See also “Stan Wright couldn’t prop up a brick wall.”

“The thing you young people don’t understand about [insert topic] is that during the war, Churchill [insert apocryphal story]”
      – George Hook, all the time

The odd thing is I really liked his historical metaphors, AND his early evening radio slot before the rape comment grenade. Don’t agree with him on that and many issues but he has an excellent memory and story-telling skill. I would definately welcome him as a dinner guest – doesn’t mean you endorse what he believes.

he’s been phoning it in for a good while. i doubt retirement will be too different to his day-to-day right now.

Hardly. I find him very difficult to listen to, for all that he strikes me decent individual But regardless of my opinion of him, I still hope he enjoys his retirement.

Nice to be nice and all that.

before I answer that… why? would that be an inappropriate comment likely to draw scorn and disdain?

Should have been done 15 years ago….
I do not know how people listen to this angry rambling rants.

I love how white has become a perjorative term for people accused of wrongthink

@Andy – so much for the Cork folk sticking together (although I always felt George used his Jewtown roots as shtick). I didn’t mind the auld fouqeur if the truth be known.

I’m talking about Tom McGurk, not Georgio. I know plenty of aul lads like George: fundamentally decent but also full of it.

          miriam? no, not that

apparently he’s wildly litigious too – and I wouldn’t like to give BS any problems

Dunno if it was age or what, but he went from being a rather charming if somewhat anachronistic and amusingly boorish host to an angry and bitter one in a short space of time?

I used to enjoy his show for all I disagreed with some of his views (but generally found common ground with him on more things than not) but near the end he just wasn’t entertaining the way he used to be.

I wouldn’t judge him by one or two of his comment though and wish him well.

His comments about the HPV vaccine in the weeks leading up to the rape comments went unnoticed.

    That was irresponsible broadcasting.

Only listened to the old windbag for a few minutes in total.
I genuinely thought he had left already?

    Forgotten but not gone eh.
