Andy Farrell (left) will replace Joe Schmidt as irish rugby coach

The New Zealander will be replaced by Ireland’s current defence coach Andy Farrell. Schmidt replaced Declan Kidney as Ireland coach in 2013 and won back-to-back Six Nations titles in 2014 and 2015.

Farrell joined the Ireland set-up in April 2016 as defence coach, having departed the same role with England, where he worked under current Leinster senior coach Stuart Lancaster.

This was pretty much expected, but still a huge shame to see the best coach we’ve ever had in any sport in this country depart. He’s leaving things in much better shape than he found them and with any luck, maybe a LOT better shape depending on how the world cup goes.

I had sort of hoped that the current Leo/Stu team might take over but as NZ have consistantly shown, continuity in management is a good thing so Farrell probably isn’t a bad choice.

it looks like he’s not actually going to another (NZ) job – taking time out, rather

don’t understand so why they announced it now. should have left it until after the WC.

They announced it now because it has been talked about for the last two years. He and the IRFU wanted to get it sorted ahead of time and provide continuity.

The difference between this and the FAI pooshow is striking

          Yeah understand that

but there have been cases of performance going to st 1t once manager’s future retirement/departure announced- happened with Wenger too (and Ferguson before him)

The assistant coach will be taking over so players still need to put in the work. Although, the idea that the Irish rugby team would phone it in when fighting for the last remaining trophy is a bit ridiculous.

He did occur to me while i was typing that particular piece of hyperbole, but I’m going to stand by it because without googling the exact results, we’ve always had boxers capable of medalling haven’t we?

I’m going to a lecture by Schmidt on Wednesday evening, should be interesting in light of this.

      Ooooh well now.

I’d say that’d be interesting regardless. He strikes me as a good skin.

        The best. An absolute gent.

My wife organised for a video message from him for our wedding and he made it his own and was really funny.

It’s interesting how we now appear to have current and next Ireland Managers in both rugby and soccer. 4 for the price of 2.

And, as we all know, having a manager and an anointed successor (or the reverse, a manager and previous manager) in a team set-up has only ever brought with it harmony, humility and success.
