This afternoon.
The announcement of the Unaccompanied Learner Driver Provisions of the Road Traffic Act 2018.
Car owners who allow learner drivers to use their cars unaccompanied will face fines or jail from midnight tonight.
Noel Clancy is featured in a new TV and Radio advert describing the events leading up to and after a horrific accident which saw the death of his young daughter and partner.
The amendment is to be known as the Clancy amendment.

I have no problem with this, but I do think there are more accidents and deaths caused by people driving on suspended licences. They come before the courts again and again driving while disqualified and what happens? Not a damn thing
+1
As the year comes to a close, Shane Ross’s flagship policy initiative, the establishment of a lay-person judicial appointments body, remains stuck at second stage in the Seanad. Two and a half years after Ross negotiated for himself a ministerial position in government, he still hasn’t been able to get his key reform through the Oireachtas despite support from FG and SF (which means it has majority support).
What consolation prizes is Shane chasing just to show the voters he’s doing what he promised? Hasn’t managed to get Stepaside open yet. So, maybe chase the road safety vote.
Chancer.
…Shane is playing a blinder…to land a ministerial pension on top of his many others…where would you get it…I’d say he has his eyes on the Aras…chancer is not necessarily a disadvantage…look at the incumbant…
He’s a useless gobpoo Can’t stand the patronising from him. Another school teacher, principal type lecturing us all. It’ll be an offence to turn on your ignition by the time he’s finished. Gobpoo.
As for this legislation, it’s sound.
Noel Clancy spoke in very effective terms about the law earlier today when he talked how it might inconvenience parents, restrict their kids. He’s been through a horrible experience and spoke with great authority.
Howz about the RSA publish a map on a website showing the locations where accidents involving death or serious injury have occurred? Trying to get this information out of them is like pulling hen’s teeth.
It will educate the public and also, highlight lazy guards shooting fish in a barrel on motorways / good roads where accidents are rare.
Something like this? A map on the RSA website showing the locations where accidents involving death or serious injury have occurred:
http://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Road-Safety/Our-Research/Collision-Statistics/Ireland-Road-Collisions/
There used to be a map some time ago showing the location of
traffic incidents, its was possibly done by the NRA which was subsumed
into another quango National Transport Authority.
Incidentally why are RSA named as such, is not their function driver
safety, where under their authority can they exercise a function with
road safety….their responsibility is driver safety.
Watch our insurance premiums plummet.
This is all well & good.. but a lot of learners have their own car.
And how long is the wait these days to sit the test? A year? Fix the root of the problem instead of this nonsense..which is just for show. Gardai let off unaccompanied learner drivers as it is. Nevermind confiscating their cars.
10-12 weeks?

The mans trying to bring Ireland up to speed with rest of civilized Europe. What’s wrong with that?He might be a prat otherwise but in this case he is absolutely correct.
the rest of ‘Europe’ have progressive public transport systems and people don’t have to wait months for a test because they have public services that are more efficient then this joke of a country. A law introduced because of one person! 1 person! That’s some influence. Probably has government connections because the oul scratch scratch wink wink is the only business etiquette the current political boo boos in this country know.
One person or one million it’s the right thing to do.It has to start somewhere.Ireland is light years behind the enlightened parts of Europe with the laws that really matter to the vast majority of people.Things like gay marriage and abortion are fine, but then you look at a criminal gang that’s called a police force and you have to wonder.
Another direct attack on rural Ireland yet these people are still expected to pay their taxes to fund progressive public transport in mainly Dublin.
Sort out the unacceptable waiting lists for a test before implementing this. As usual Ireland making a balls of it. What do you expect with clowns like Ross. Where da fok does that accent come from. #reason126 why Ireland is the laughing stock of the world.
Yeah that accent is very fupping strange. He’s like an RTE weather girl on crack. Where’s he from? Where did he come from? Who is he? Self important toss pot.
