Merry Christmas Broadsheet staffers… fair play to you for putting out the Stephen’s Day papers Christmas night!

I hope you had a wonderful day with family, friends and/or whomever makes you happy :)

-deep dive by WaPo into Cerberus (owns billions Irish loans) and evictions in Memphis, perhaps most famous in Irl for Elvis and Graceland-apols if paywall but has few free articles per week/month.

“Record 40 migrants try to cross Channel on Christmas Day” reports the Telegraph.

    Yeah, they all succeeded too!

I always wondered why there wasn’t more of this sort of thing, it’s less than 40 kms from Calais to Dover. At around 6km/hr which you’d handily do in a rowing boat, you could leave Calais at 8am and be in Dover by 3pm. In fact, with 2hrs off in Dover for shopping and a bite to eat, you could be back at Calais before midnight.

The migrants yesterday used inflatables with an outboard motor, probably took them less than an hour.

Put another way – for Remainers: At around 6km/hr which you’d handily do in a rowing boat, you could leave Dover at 8am and be in Calais by 3pm. Not that anyone in the EU wants you…

Fair play to Leo for giving the papers something to write about over Christmas (well done David Young in the Press Association for doing all the hard work); HRH Leo’s Christmas Day Message is the commitment not to increase property tax even though property prices have nearly doubled since the tax was introduced. That will benefit 1.2 million of the 1.8m households in the country which own their home (outright or with a mortgage) and, of course, the landlords which own the other 0.6m (private and housing associations account for 0.4m and local authorities around 0.2m).

The proposal narrows the tax base, contrary to IMF and fiscally conservative thought, and is a big Fupp You from FG to its beloved economic mentors, and an even bigger unashamed howyadoin to its traditional constituency. It’s populism a Christmas miracle!

Aye. We had the Christmas Tree decoration, the spending christmas with Matts parents, and oddly enough Vacron thinks the exemption from LPT was for building houses.. “”That was done for a particular reason in 2013 to encourage increased housing supply but that is now going in the right direction. We need to consider that and it will bring in extra money for local authorities.”
Not even a professional waffler at this stage.

He said there would be no SHARP increase in the property tax, which is not the same as no increase. As for the HRH reference, was that really necessary?

I see Israel decided to terrorise the citizens of Damascus on Christmas day by launching an unprovoked missile strike on the city, according to the Jerusalem Post, in order to “embarrass” the Assad government which was seeking to highlight a “victory over terrorism” this Christmas after several months of relative quiet. Shocking stuff.. Lack of coverage in western media https://www.jpost.com/Arab-Israeli-Conflict/Airstrike-in-Damascus-an-embarrassment-for-Syrian-regime-at-crucial-time-575437

hmmm jpost page seems to have been removed within the last half hour… now shows “Error 404 – Page not found”… too close to the bone maybe!

Could it be that once again The Irish Times wins Best Shoot-Yourself-in-the-Foot Award 2017?

The late Eileen Battersby’s publisher writes: ‘It’s a brutal irony that she should die just at the moment when she was getting over her painful separation from the Irish Times.’

Could they have been dumb enough to send her on her way… to the far superior FT?
