Fair play to HRH Leo for giving three of the four Irish broadsheets a front-page headline today, it’s wonderful that our noble band of independent political journalists can still treat Leo at arms length even though he gives them such nuggets during a slow domestic news week. Aside from us being required to fund loss-making RTE if we possess a TV and therefore having an interest in its fat cat presenters costs, there are two issues here. One is, Miriam is a presenter and is required by RTE’s very own producer guidelines to be impartial, extracurricular income can affect impartiality. Secondly, Miriam’s extracurricular income is likely to be dependent on her RTE profile, so it’s of interest to us all, especially when RTE is making huge losses and yet can afford to pay her €299,000 a year (in 2016).

I’ve yet to see someone moan about the low advertising rates or the inflated aquisition costs or the union related costs that make local programme making so expensive. It’s always just petty jealousy about someone getting paid more than the whinger.
