This afternoon.
Chairperson of the development board of the National Children’s Hospital, Tom Costello delivers to TDs the projected cost of the hospital situated off the South Circular Road (top).
Cost of new children’s hospital a ‘catastrophic failure’ (RTÉ)

‘there are lessons to be learned about competitive tendering’
Building a billion euro medical centre for children should NOT be a “learn on the job” kind of process
What’s the point in having highly qualified highly paid people on this board if they either don’t know what they’re bloody doing or just don’t care
UNBELIEVABLE
It sucks.

Cosy
I particularly like this one
‘Mr Quinn is the Government’s Chief Procurement Officer and is tasked with delivering procurement reform across the public service, supporting compliant and value for money procurement. Paul is also head of the Office of Government Procurement (OGP) which brings together public procurement policy, strategy, and operations. The OGP commenced operations in 2014 and has put in place 150 framework agreements for its public sector clients. Paul holds an MBA, a Degree in Engineering and Diplomas in Company Direction and Accounting & Finance. He is a member of the Development Board for the New Children’s Hospital at St. James’ Hospital and chairs its finance committee.’
But as you say, very cosy
Are they building it out of pure gold and diamonds?
Is this another example of how something which we see as simply *costing* piles of money – like war, for example – actually *making* piles of the stuff for certain players.
I hate to be the one to point out the blindingly obvious but whenever ANYHING *costs* money, it means someone else *makes* money , otherwise it wouldn’t *cost* anything in the first place.
I think it’s the “for certain players” aspect that’s the nub here, rotide.
Yep, when FG put a tender for building out, it’s a case of bam! and the price goes up. The flinstones are missing a baby.
How does tendering work – can a company that didn’t get the gig because their estimate was higher than the winning bid (but lower than this revised figure) sue?
And what about breach of contract. If I got a builder to work on my house, I’d expect them to get the job done at the price agreed.
Exactly! If the construction company underbid, shouldn’t the onus be on them to pay the overruns?
can i tender to build the next motorway from galway to donegal? €10 all in, subject to cost reviews…
Excellent, pixel! :-D
