Ellie Kisyombe
Ellie Kisyombe will run as a Social Democrat candidate in Dublin’s North Inner City in the local elections on May 24 next for a seat in Dublin City Council.
The Social Democrats write:
“Ellie Kisyombe came to Ireland from Malawi in 2010 and has spent the last eight years living in Direct Provision. During this time she’s lived through and witnessed the uncaring conditions people in this country’s asylum system experience.
Following a volunteering position with the Irish Refugee Council, Ellie co-founded Our Table in 2015 as a response to the ban on asylum seekers cooking for themselves and in order to give an outlet to her passion for food and cooking.
Our Table is as a community-based, non-profit project designed to highlight the need to end direct provision in Ireland. The project operates pop-up cafés in Dublin and provides catering services in the rest of the country.
Creativity, activism and entrepreneurship have been the foundations of Ellie’s life in both Ireland and Malawi – lessons and talents she hopes to bring to Dublin City Council.”
Further to Ellie getting a huge amount of support on Twitter last night, Ellie tweeted this morning:
I want to take this opportunity in thanking all of you for your great love and support!! I am not sure which right words to use!! Am speechless ❤ ( The community spirit) That’s what is known to me from Irish people am proud to be here! Ireland is home for me!! (Zikomo Kwambili)

Why haven’t you mentioned that the love-in followed some race baiting from far right Gemma O’Doherty?

Just one tweet has completely changed my mind about GO’D. Vile.
I don’t think Broadsheet does negative stories on yer wan unless forced to…
That’s almost akin to RTE not having anyone mention bankers on their player.
Eh Broadsheet?
You’re entitled to your own opinion; not your own facts.
BS clearly supported GOD for a run at the presidency only. BS didn’t support her before and hasn’t since. GOD’s post-election nomination utterances are somewhere along the spectrum of Alt-right Revenge to Cry For Help. What her Tweets have to do with Broadsheet now beats me – the best thing to do is ignore them. And her.
Broadsheet don’t acknowledge her existence ever since she turned into a racist homophobic nutcase. Only 6 months ago they were pushing for her to be the president.
best of luck to her. seems like a good and honest person. very much what’s needed.
Why?
cos it’ll irk you, lovey
I like her. The Social Democrats have some very good candidates.
+1
A candidate in Fingal would be great actually. Thanks.
+1.
Fair dues (fair views?).
It was great to see this reaction to G ‘O Doherty’s tweet: https://twitter.com/gemmaod1/status/1087652484481458176
That gave me great enjoyment
Heh. Nice.
She seems to be completely crackers.
Virtue signaling aside. How practical is this? At a council level what could she possibly bring regarding rates, property tax and local issues?
She could certainly bring her experience of living in Ireland for the last 9 years and perhaps also be a spokesperson for people living in direct provision.
Well said rP
plus real Pol.
Does Dublin Council need a spokesperson for people living in direct provision? Does Dublin Council have any influence on direct provision?
There is only one centre in Dublin City – (Hatch Hall, 28 Lower Hatch Street) housing 320 people.
Census 2016 says there are 323 Malawians in the country.
So hopefully she is representing a lot more than Malawians and Direct Provision peoples.
You actually spent time researching the number of Malawians in the country and the status of DP in Dublin just to refute a throwaway comment on BS? Wow. Maybe you are a paid FG shill like they say.
I’m here procrastinating btw, but if I ever get to that level of nitpickery please pry the device from my frazzled fingers.
Michael I’m curious to know what you think any of the rest of them that are currently elected bring?
Best of luck to this candidate, don’t know anything about her but she is new, I presume smart and she is young and full of ideas. She comes from a background where she and her family have lived in the most deprived manner, so I’m sure she understands the importance of being a caring and compassionate society, which is exactly what this country needs. If i could vote in her constituency id take a bet on her and give her a first preference
Being completely shallow- what a happy looking woman- go you.
…shouldn’t Broadsheet declare an interest when it comes to supporting political parties…
8 years in direct provision.
Thats a lot of failed asylum hearings.
And yet, as you can see, she’s been extremely active in giving back to the community since getting out of DP.
So, she’s evidently not the stereotype you’re trying to paint her as. I’d say the 8 year wait is more of a comment on our DP systems, and not on her as an individual.
what Milly said
Boom.
More of a comment on the lack of a quick decision followed by exit from dp or deportation.
Pretty graceless backpedalling there Ollie. Your 2 comments are like a wee mirror of G O’Ds tweets yesterday – ‘Oh look at that, an asylum seeker going for election for a party I disapprove of’ – followed by ‘I was just saying! If you read everything I’ve ever written you’ll realise I think she’s “brave” – dopes’.
It’s all the fault of the blacks.
Seen one in PantiBar the other night, kissing a girl he was, imagine, in PantiBar, they’ll be taking over soon I tell you, there will be black babies everywhere, mark my words, especially in PantiBar.
Now remember to blink after reading that.
If she was a Brexit-avoiding Brit she could have got an Irish passport – now questions asked. One in five of immigrants to Ireland is a Brit. People from Malawi are hardly here for the weather.
Actually, I know Nigerian fella who is here for the weather. He can’t stand heat, anything over 20 and he is in a bad mood. You’re a black African ffs I said but nope, fans going in every room in the house,
We are always complaining about the Irish weather but when you grew up in real extremes, it is actually quite pleasant.
I know so many people from warm regions who haaaaate the heat and actually love the weather here. It’s hilarious to hear them complain about having to visit home cos they’ll melt, while I’m envious of the “holiday” weather they’ll be getting.
Fair play
A total joke that BS did not mention their (hopefully former) hero Gemma in this report. Did they miss that on Twitter last night? When will BS come up with a Mea Culpa about their ridiculous support for her?
The serious editorial debacle that was the Presidential campaign coverage on this site remains unaddressed.
I’d vote for her. I truly hope has the stomach for the bile coming her way.
I feel grubby just by the few nasty posts here alone. I’ll never understand the likes of GO’D and the likes.
As an aside, great article in the Guardian today on the devastating affects that those suckered into the horse manure peddled by conspiracy theorists have caused.
