Sie Ist Unter Uns

This afternoon.

Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, Dublin

German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrives for talks with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar just nine days before Britain could leave the European Union without a deal – unless it can break an impasse in parliament.

Ahead of their formal meeting, Ms Merkel and Mr Varadkar are participating in a roundtable discussion with people from the North and border area (above).

More as we get it.

Making sure we’re getting those Border Inspection Posts set up this week ;-)
“New controls will have to be carried out at our borders with the UK. Member States are setting up Border Inspection Posts and the Commission is swiftly approving these.
Member States have also recruited the necessary staff to handle customs and safety checks. More than 2,000 professionals have been recruited in the countries most affected (France, Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, Denmark).”
RTE doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to report this speech today.

ah but if they spent too much time on that population-worrying stuff there wouldn’t be enough time left for nice stories like Hamish the Terrier, see?

This is why I love the European institutions – they get stuff done. Overlords welcome.

There’s been plenty talk on the news of the staffing up in Irish customs, in fairness.

Not a defence of anything, just saying it has been reported, and mentioned, quite a few times.

Can the Broadsheet Outraged™ please pin their colours to the flag today and decide now how they feel about this?

      a) If Brexit does happen, there are too few customs people employed: bad government for not planning properly.
      b) If Brexit doesn’t happen (immediately), there are a load of extra customs people employed that aren’t actually needed: bad government for wasting money.

Conveniently diverting from the Northern Ireland border issue eh Cian?
        From that press release.

In other words, Ireland has a land border with the UK which will have to have inspection posts. Take your instructions with dignity Leo.
