It’s not often something in the media upsets me, but reading her partners words about her loss really hit a nerve.

Cold comfort I know and I would find it hard to accept myself, but it does seem that this senseless barbarism does have a positive aspect to it.

Cold comfort all the same though to her partner, Sara Canning.

I cannot be there for this, unfortunately. But this does put me in mind of the murder of Jo Cox, whose own brutal murder galvanised a renewal of her message, not the one of hate that took her life. [I mention Jo because she was a former colleague and friend, should anyone wonder]

I heard Sara Canning speak not about condemnation, but wanting to continue to push for Lyra’s agenda of peace and inclusiveness. And she was asking that everyone do the same, not to seek revenge or retribution.

I think it is not that senseless barbarism has a positive side, so much as it forces us to face what we find acceptable in our society.

I think perhaps Lyra connected with so many people, even those who didn’t know her because she spent so much of her time reaching out to younger LGBT through her writing while also, being a truth speaker to the wider. You could tell just by listening that there was no harm in that girl. An innocent.

The only flag of politics was the Rainbow and I expect there will be representatives of all political shades at her funeral tomorrow, including the DUP. Quite an achievement, although, not one she ever intended. Who knows, maybe her legacy will be the catalyst for them all to bloody well grow up and get on with the job they are well paid to do.

But I will say this. If as is rumoured it was a young fella who pulled that trigger then he is a victim too. His life is also ruined because he will be caught and he will spend a long time in jail. All because a few bitter old creeps in the background miss the bad old days. There are no winners in what happened- absolutely none.
