Behold: the 2020 Lotus Evora GT Coupe – an aluminium and carbon fibre sportscar that encapsulates legendary Lotus founder Colin Chapman’s ethos of simplicity and lightness.

Powered by a mid-mounted  supercharged 3.5l Toyota V6, it will reach 100km/h in 3.8 seconds and top out at 300km/h.

Yours for about €86,500.

    €86,500?

It’s less than €78,000 in the UK at today’s exchange rate.

And therein lies a big problem for Irish car sales. Today’s figures for July show 33% of cars registered were private imports (almost certainly UK). With the continued weakening of sterling, that % is set to increase.

Five car dealers have gone to the wall in the first week of August after the 192 damp squib in July. With sterling likely to remain in the trenches for the next couple of months, you can expect more liquidations.
