That’s so funny.
It’s still very hard to resist the customary cheer when there’s a crash from the kitchen – dates back to boarding school days.

There’s a special place in hell for the numpties who clap during the performance of a play, let alone stand when it’s over just because the person beside them does.

Right up there with the murderers, betrayers and Hitler, I’m sure.
But also yes.

But where do you stand on clapping after every jazz solo? I prefer to reserve my applause only for when I feel the performer plays something particularly exceptional – I don’t want to feel like I’m gong along with convention out of peer pressure

Reminds me of the story about the fellow washed up on a small island. He lay conked out for three days, and was awoken by one of the natives. In the background, up in the hills, there were many drums being beaten. It went on and on, 24hours a day, non stop. He asked the native after a few days if there was any way to stop those drums as they were doing his head in.
The native said ‘ no – you wouldn’t want those drums to stop’
‘why’ the fellow asked
‘Bass solo’ came the reply.

Hah! ..Speaking of bass solos, I saw this video recently and was unexpectedly entertained. Guy sets up internet challenge for various bass virtuosos to submit to him the most difficult bass line they can muster. He then attempts to mimic what they play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcEl4_XP4fs

agreed, but I guess it’s done in a style to keep the youtube masses interested -seems to be a winning formula with over 3 million hits in less than 3 weeks

What; no mention of clapping at the telly when a goal is scored.
