    mason’s marks – usually to identify the banker mason so he could be sure he’d get paid. could also be an assembly mark, which was to help whoever was laying the stones place them correctly. some quarries also had own marks, attesting to quality of the stone. this is as far as I know all 16-18 C stuff.

      Those guides are great. It’s such a pity that our local authorities pay little attention to them.
