Whirlpool washing machine

This lunchtime.

RTÉ reports:

Whirlpool is recalling 11,000 Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines because of fire safety risks.

The machines were manufactured between between October 2014 and February 2018.

The company said the recall does not affect Whirlpool branded washing machines.

It said that as many as 519,000 washing machines in the UK could be affected.

Whirlpool has identified a flaw with the door-locking system that could lead to the machines overheating and potentially catching fire.

Customers should visit here or call 0818 903 281 to check if their appliance is affected.

My machine is a combination washer-dryer. It is going on 15 years old, and I just had to change a water intake valve (less than 50 Euro). Works fine otherwise.

My Dad recently retired his 35 year old Hotpoint washing machine, having changed the brushes on it a couple of times, but otherwise it working perfectly (he moved house and the new one had a machine, so the old one could still be working). His previous machine lasted more than 20 years in a very large family, with on average 5 washes a day. The days before the modern electronic systems – that thing was clock work!

Sadly, I think that more recent machines suffer from lower quality of build of materials, or potentially deliberate obsolescence.
