Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Fine Gael Wexford by-election candidate Verona Murphy

This afternoon.

Via RTÉ:

Verona Murphy has confirmed to RTÉ News that she is to be deselected as a general election candidate by Fine Gael.

Ms Murphy said she is going to take a break from politics over Christmas, and will assess her options in the New Year.

During the by-election campaign Ms Murphy apologised after claiming that some asylum seekers coming to Ireland have to be “deprogrammed” as they “carry angst” and may have been “infiltrated by ISIS”.

Murphy confirms she will be deselected as a Fine Gael candidate (RTÉ)

If anything, she will go Independent if she does decide to go at all. But as is the case – Once a FGer, always a FGer.
Kehoe removed her picture from his constituency offices weeks ago.

    So two cases of de-selection.
    a) Bailey deselected because FG head office says it will always support to local constituency people.
    b) Murphy deselected because FG wouldn’t give the local constituency people any say.

Notably both Coveney and Varadkar went canvassing and supporting Murphy. In effect showing their support for her views. So shouldn’t they be deselected?

Deselected because she embarrassed the party with stupid comments and failed to get elected. Fair enough.

Yep – but if FG say in one case that they listen to the local FGers and go on their decisions, and in the other case the local FGers get no say, that smacks of inconsistency. (Nothing new with Varadkar & Co. mind you).

        They’re getting rid of the
        – Insurance claimants (Bailey, but not not Farrell strangely enough)
        – Racists (Murphy) (But not Flanagan, strangely enough)
        – Slow payers of debts (Rays golden handshake that he wasn’t entitled to) (Has Regina repaid the payment she shouldn’t have received as Chief Whip allowance. I wonder.)

    Love the two simultaneous reports;
    1. After a few months in politics she tells everyone she’s taking a break from it over xmas (when almost everyone takes a break)
    2. FG announce they’ve sacked her.
    Hilarious.

Don’t know about that. The by election meant that the FG vote came out for her (those boyos would vote for a a poster of Nigel Farage if it had FG in the corner of it). I certainly wouldn’t vote for her, as she’s no Mick Wallace ;-) )

Not a hope. She came an embarrassing third when she had party backing and money. She’ll get a few preferences, but without the party machinery and budget, she’ll get nowhere near the quota. Not all independents in Wexford get treated like Mick Wallace.

In the meantime, FF completes its morphing into FG, with newly-elected FFer Malcolm Byrne backing Fisticuffs Feighan for Ireland to join the Commonwealth.
That Jesus fellow doing a lot of weeping these days.
