We do really punch above our weight in international diplomacy.

Any other small country give their eye teeth for an annual, guaranteed one-on-one meeting + photo op with the U.S. president.

i don’t want charger to agree with me here, but we do seem to ‘get our way’ by compromising ourselves in other ways.

The fact that you are comparing us with one country that has enormously powerful lobby of its own, and one which the U.S. economy is heavily-reliant on for its mineral exports (and which also has a population of 33 million, hardly a minnow), shows how powerful our soft power is; ask Bulgaria, Czechia, Belgium or Finland how envious they are of our unique position.

Easy get our way. Take €5bn from the EU Covid fund, and give €16bn back. Or be the bad bank for German/French bondholders.

    What exactly is our ‘way’?

    Don’t get suckered in lads

A few patronage gigs here and there is just window dressing
A form of appeasement for the lads

And overseas Paddys Day events generally tend to be organised locally by well-to-do 3rd & 4th Generation Paddys with local political leverage and clout; ie the Hibernians
Its a photo- op for them too

In fairness Paddys Day is the greatest international marketing tool we have
    Celebrated and known everywhere
No other best little or not so little Country in the World would love their National Holiday to be as established and widespread

    It makes news everywhere

I smell Reeks of complicity alongside that other small Euro statelet >> Amazing what the Son of a Roman revenue inspector can achieve while captivated with Gracious Spirits & Shamrocks >>
