EU Commissioner Phil Hogan stayed in a Limerick hotel and ate at a restaurant in Adare on August 12, one day before his 14-day isolation period was due to expire.

Multiple sources have confirmed to the Irish Examiner that Mr Hogan stayed in the Dunraven Arms Hotel on the night before he played a round of golf at Adare Manor.

    Didn’t think Phil Hogan (or Dara Calleary) should lose their jobs for their actions re Clifden but Phil Hogan should lose his job for his actions in the last week.

    Hogan is saying his negative test in hospital ended the need for him to restrict his movements, he’s one slippery customer is Big Phil, having previously stated that he restricted his movements for 14 days no?

      – no mention of hospital test negating the need to restrict movements, the mention of ‘late July’ implying he had done his full 14 days, hmmm…

      It’s still lovely. I love having lunch there. Adare Manor is like Ballyfin: you can’t just wander in for a nose.

        personally I HATE snooty places
        been fortunate enough to have stayed in many 5*’s and a couple of 6*’s over the years and it’s entirely possible to attain top of the top excellence without the pretences
        couple of years ago due to some travel shenanigans we were somehow put up in the famous castle 30 mins up the road from the Arms for a couple of days….gawd the fake french snootyness shape throwing with The Quiet Man for the Americans combo was toe curling

          I enjoyed it, found it elegant and low key with delicious breakfast & afternoon tea and lovely grounds the one time I stayed there, admittedly eons ago, circa 2011. Maybe the atmosphere has changed since they upgraded a few years ago.

    He got the results of the Covid test then overnight? Some service eh? One rule for him, one for us?

    I see he didn’t give the full link to where he says that a negative result ends the self-isolation, though he may be correct. However the self-isolation refers to inbound travel into the country, and not a get-out for a lockdown situation.

      If you look at the timeline so helpfully provided you can see:
      31 July: Arrival in Ireland (14 day self-isolation starts)
      5/6 August: Hospital & negative result (self-isolation no longer necessary)
      7 August: Move to Kilkenny
      8 August: Lockdown starts

      He wasn’t in any of the three counties when the lockdown started – so lockdown didn’t apply to him… He also just had a negative test result so there is minimal risk of spreading it (from Kildare).

          But there is to adhere to lockdown. He travelled into Kildare, and stopped off during lockdown.

            He also provided reasons for both stop-offs – which he considers to be “reasonable”. If they are “reasonable excuses” then he didn’t break the law.

        And I wonder did he update his contact details, as required under SI181, after he took up residence in a place other than the place of residence specified in the Covid-19 Passenger Locator Form.
        These forms are destroyed 28 days after arrival, so they need to check if they exist before Friday!

    So, 12th August he travelled to Dublin to meet Varadkar about US-EU trade talks. (Would have brought the documents with him then?)
    He then (he says) returned to Kilkenny that evening (12th August)
    Yet he was dining that evening, 12th August, in Adare.

    From the Examiner:

    “Mr Hogan’s spokesman has confirmed the commissioner played golf on August 13, but did not address specific queries from the Irish Examiner about his presence in Adare the night before.

    He was seen dining at the Limerick restaurant in the town on August 12, the same day that he had met with Tánaiste Leo Varadkar in Dublin, a meeting a spokesperson had said was “essential”.

    On further questioning, the spokesperson said that Mr Hogan had travelled to Adare from Kilkenny but “he did not know on which date”.”

    Has Varadkar verified that the meeting took place on 12th by the way? Maybe he now has to be a little careful in case he too gets dragged down.

    If you are a close contact of a confirmed case you have to restrict your movements for 14 days even if your test comes back negative. This is because it can take up to 14 days for the virus to show up in your system after you have been exposed to it.

    Phil Hogan is providing a useful service to the public.

    Get tested for Covid-19. If you’re negative you can come and go as you please.
    That satisfies Irish and European statutory instruments.

    Now if I was one of those individuals that were detained by the Guards or prosecuted for travel restriction I would be looking for a Covid 19 test to prove otherwise and be recompensed for the inconvenience.

      Not true, according to HSE in a statement after his interview on RTE. An interesting interview where he said he did not care what the HSE said. I recommend anyone who did not already to watch it. the arrogance is arrant.

    Did he not say or did someone report that he left Kildare 2 days before lockdown to go to Hosp appointment in Kilkenny, then he convalesced in Kilkenny before stopping off in Kildare before heading to Galway.

    Also can you get a covid test and result that quick?

    I prefer the ones Nick’s competition finds. While these are coming out just like the recent wonderful troves of musical delight in the competitions, these ones evoke dismay.

    Edit: I should add here I watched the interview on RTE, and to be fair to Tony Connelly, he really gave no ground and pushed, while being very polite. At one point, I thought Phil Hogan was going to snap angrily.

    Also, Tony, and all crew the camera showed as Mr Hogan entered, wore a mask. Big Phil did not. as they are for the protection of those around you, this again shows a disdain for others in preference to his own comfort.

    At times like this I think it’s important to remember that the very worst outcome for Phil in this situation is that he’s forced to resign from Brussels and retire on 60 grand a year of money we put in his pockets

      One of the reasons I dislike the ‘I tendered my resignation’ farce. If they are fired, they don’t get the pension. So they get to resign. Problem solved for the politicos, but still they get sorted.

      Not to mention the private deals that will come through after.

    Had Hogan any other person in his company, had he a minder, how many phones did he have
    in his possession, since he was engaged in Trade Negotiation’s with of all people…the yanks
    how secure was his communication channels, and his documentation, then there is the other
    issue surrounding Cliften and the Golf Venue, what security did the Guards provide, given
    that there were so many big wigs in such a location, what else has the Commissioner
    not told Helen MacIntee,there is more to this than using a mobile phone

    Hogan said in his submission to Von der Leyen, and in his interview with Connolly that citizensinformation.ie was funded by the HSE. It is NOT.

    Citizensinformation.ie also issued a statement which is at odds with Hogan’s ‘explicit’ claim.

    Hogan has tried to pull the wool over Von der Leyen’ eyes big time. Ashe won’t thank him for that. Nor will she thank Varadkar for placing Hogan in Europe a second time.

        I know. I got used to insomnia over the past couple of months, so my sleep pattern has been all over the place.
        But I’ll never let the possibility of a dig at people like Hogan pass, regardless of the time of day or night.
        There are too many unanswered questions, and each day brings another batch.

        There’s a distinct lack of thought-out come-back from the usual apologists, which disappoints me though. It’s too easy at the moment.
