Another diverting animated video essay from The School of Life – well worth a watch if you have time on your hands, especially too much time. To wit:
We long to get all our work done in order to have free time. But we should be very careful with leisure. Having nothing left to do work-wise can be a very dangerous challenge for our psyches: it can bring on despair and self-loathing. It may be that always having projects on the go can insulate us from mental unwellness.

So, the message is keep working, proles. He lost me when he said the mind can only handle one day of relaxation. I’ve been on a 2 week holiday.
Yeh it’s a bit weird at the end, can’t take a long holiday? and why is retiring reckless? Dd I miss something?
yeah, i have a shed load of stuff to get through today, but i’ve spent the morning watching tutorials on lap steel guitar from yer wan in larkin poe.
Oooh! Nice, I’ve been looking for some good Lap steel guitar tutorials. I’ve got the Chicken pluckin’ blues.
Its basically saying existential thinking is very unpleasant, so busy yourself until death?
Good analysis, terrible conclusion.
The whole point of breaks, holidays, sabbaticals, etc. is to take away the busy distractions and really dig deep. If I’m going to die and life is pointless, then where and how shall I create purpose that aligns with my values and what I want from this short span of time as a piece of the universe made conscious.
Unpleasant, but essential work for us all.
I like what you said there RobbieC
“If I’m going to die and life is pointless, then where and how shall I create purpose that aligns with my values and what I want from this short span of time as a piece of the universe made conscious,”you can definately go on a holiday, have structure and meaning and socialize with a group that shares that, I did that on a walking holiday, each day walking through the countryside talking with people who enjoyed that as well, having one or two beers and a lunch and chat in the afternoon, in the evening after a long relaxing walk we had drinks, compare that with the second week there by myself, just eating out and having food, no social interaction, not as good as the first week, not much meaning, no purpose really.
