Last night.
Government Buildings, Dublin 2.
Cabinet members leave after agreeing to Level 5 restrictions across the country. From top: Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney; Minister for Justice Helen McEntee Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris; Minister for Education Norma Foley.
Meanwhile….
Dr Niamh Hourigan, Sociologist and Vice-President of Academic Affairs at Mary Immaculate College
Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Prof [Niamh] Hourigan said that fear was a significant driver of behaviour in April and encouraged people to adhere to the rules, along with a form of “Covid shaming” in person and online.
She said the restrictions were also a novelty the first time round and people “didn’t really know what they were getting into”.
She added the change in seasons and the shorter days must be acknowedged and how these may potentially contribute to more transgressions this time round.
Covid-shaming.
Transgressions.
Science rocks!
Level 5: Non-essential shops to close, 5km travel limit (RTÉ)

“Prof Hourigan said that fear was a significant driver of behaviour in April and encouraged people to adhere to the rules, along with a form of “Covid shaming” in person and online.” – so, this person is open about fear being used as a tactic to subjagate the people and even calls for Covid shaming of those not adhering to this lunacy. Do not be surprised if we see our first outbreaks of violent incidents in the community.
“so, this person is open about fear being used as a tactic to subjagate the people and even calls for Covid shaming of those not adhering to this lunacy”
No she’s not E’Matty. I don’t think you’re reading her correctly. I read it that she says people were more afraid of the virus and more likely to shame people for their “transgresisons” in the first lockdown than they are now. She’s not calling for people to shame anyone and she’s not trying to scare people. Certainly not in the quote above anyway.
“encouraged people to adhere to the rules, along with a form of “Covid shaming” in person and online.” hmmm, sounds an awful like she’s encouraging Covid Shaming online and in person. Here’s a tip for anyone considering it, do it online. You’re likely to get your head kicked in if you do it in person.
She’s talking about what happened in April. You can tell because the three words before you began your quote were “in April and”. Selective quoting is a really poor way of trying to make a point.
Try to avoid getting violent with people E’Matty, even if they do have a go at you about your transgressions. It’s more than likely not about you but is usually their own stress needing an outlet.
I mentioned before that fear / anxiety have a role in keeping us safe.
Not if you already have some sort of anxiety issues- or even just worried about paying the rent or mortgage- the media has been grossly irresponsible in their fear mongering.
IMO there is an awful bang of class snobbery about all of this- sitting working from home with their fast growing savings while poor people are literally trying to keep the wolf from the door.
yes, so easy to pay lip service to the suffering from comfort of your own home
But if we don’t have some level of fear we’ll ignore the guidelines and the virus will never be suppressed. What then?
The virus will never be suppressed- only slowed.
A comment below Ivor Cummins new presentation
“The facts do not matter. Its not about facts. Its about fear, manipulation and control. They do not care how many lives they destroy just as long as people learn to keep each other in line and do as they are told.”

I don’t understand the need to close retail. Shops can enforce social distancing (we’re all used to queuing outside by now anyway), hand sanitiser on arrival and facemasks which is supposed to be all we need to prevent the spread. I know food shops and chemists have to stay open because we need them to live but are they really any safer than a book or clothes shop with the correct measures enforced?
Is the reasoning that fewer shops open means less need to leave the house? Perhaps if the government would explain these decisions we could be more on board with them but we’re just not getting that and it’s hard to get buy in on a trust basis when the government has shown themselves to be less than trustworthy.

Watching Michael Martin last night on the live announcement… Jesus could he fudge it any worse. Far too much waffle delivered in such a singular toned drone like manner it was difficult to maintain interest in what should be an engaging and important announcement. I’ve heard bad weather announcements made with clearer and more direct communication. I was screamin’ in my head “give me the point by point Michael!”.
Never cared for the man, but by Christ I came away from that thinking he’s a feckin eejit.
De ting is with all de dees and de dats and de doze and de udder tings it was quite hard to concentrate on de Mehole.
And Connolly’s vast hazelnut-shaped bonce was totally off-putting.
But the devil is in the detail and Verucca let the real news slip last night – wet pubs won’t be open again till 2021.
The closing of retail is to destroy the SME sector. It’s all just part of the Great Reset. Check out Karl Scwhab’s (the founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum) book “Covid-19: The Great Reset” in which he sets out what the impact will be of this global restructuring. All retail is now to be in the digital sphere.
Aw gee. I hope the global reset of the retail trade doesn’t wipe out the second-hand clothing dealers in flea markets and charity shops.
“I hope the global reset of the retail trade doesn’t wipe out the second-hand clothing dealers in flea markets and charity shops.” oh, they’re all to close and who knows if they’ll ever open again. “Aw gee” How lovely of you to show such consideration for the hundreds of thousands who will now lose their jobs, many for good.
I’ll have a link please, one from the top please Matty.
Here ya go. It’s a perfectly rational read.

Here’s a review of the book by Modern Diplomacy
https://moderndiplomacy.eu/2020/07/16/covid-19-the-great-reset-the-first-policy-book-on-the-covid-crisis-globally/
“The book offers a panoramic overview of the current situation. The first chapter assesses the impact of the pandemic on five macro categories: economic, societal, geopolitical, environmental and technological. The second chapter considers the effects in micro terms, on specific industries and companies. The third hypothesizes about the nature of the possible consequences at the individual level.
Great Reset, Great Replacement, Great Barrington…
Who says things aren’t great?
The Great War, the Great Recession, Great Britain….not all things Great are actually great.
The Great Hunger
An Gorta Mor
The Great Gatsby
If you bothered to do any sort of research you would know that Great Barrington is the town in which the declaration was drawn up- but sure why start now eh?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Barrington,_Massachusetts
About the only thing in that “declaration” that’s believable.
Signed Dr Daisy Chainsaw- professor of bullpoo at nowhere university.
Thing is- their opinion is way more left wing than all of your plastic nonsense together.
My Bullpoo degree comes from Bovine University. I studied there with roughly half the signatories.
Oddly enough Daisy
I was thinking of launching a Great Bake In
or On
like with the Christmas n’everything
What d’ think?
Anything to do with Bake offs or ins is fine with me.
I can’t guarantee mine will be anything approaching great though!
If it goes anywhere
I’ll update you on the twitter
Thanks.
Yes. And retail premises have invested heavily in anti-Covid measures as well only to be told that the investment wasn’t worth it.
In what world is covid shaming something to be encouraged ??????????? Is this the mentality we are meant to buy into, have I gotten trapped in some kind of dark parallel universe….
shame on you, janet
say it again ;)
I blame the lads at CERN
They turn on that Large Hadron Collider, pop us into a parallel earth and next thing ya know Bowie’s dead, Trump is US president, they remake Ghostbusters and now this mess ;-)
The Varadkar Colander
You sound like a lockdown dodger.
Typical plague rat spreading their vile rona heresy online.
(Am I doing it right? Have I shamed you? Am I part of something yet?)
All in jest of course.
:)
you forgot to call me a granny killer
Depends on what is meant by it.
If someone is gargled and going around telling everyone that they love them and trying to get a hug, that’s idiotic behaviour and the person should be called out for it.
If someone is ASD or has some other genuine reason and cannot wear a mask, then it’s not OK to ‘shame’ them. Which is why I keep my opinions to myself when I see someone shopping with a mask, I just stay away and wonder if they do indeed have a genuine reason not to wear one, no need to start making someone feel terrible about it, invisible disability is a very real thing.
Agreed, more personal responsibility please. If something feels wrong then don’t be a judge at a golf dinner. Have sense and make yourself scarce instead. Keep your nose behind your mask and out of other people’s affairs.
Don’t blame ASD for not wearing masks. I have relatives and friends with children, including adult children, on the spectrum and they’ve patiently helped them get used to masks. There are people with genuine reasons, but most who do are at least trying by wearing visors or getting shopping delivered to keep them away from people who won’t wear masks.
The whole shaming thing is so crazy.
Seeing people shaming others online for not following the restrictions and getting us “back into trouble”
If they took 5 mins to check they’d see that cases have doubled (even tripled) all over Europe in the last 2-3 weeks. UK, Germany, France, Netherlands – even Sweden.
Sure Poland’s figure have been pretty consistent all the way through, (few hundred each day) they had 1900 cases Oct 1st and jumped to 9600 cases by Oct 17th
It’s the natural progression of the disease
And these muppets are encouraging us to blame and shame each other. FFS
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/poland/
Haven’t they been telling us for months that we’d get a second wave in winter?
is that coveney’s second wave ?
I hope they all get the clap
or the noose preferably.
The first post above from you Matt:
”Do not be surprised if we see our first outbreaks of violent incidents in the community.”
What’s wrong, the violence not coming quick enough – tell us who you think should be executed here? Give names and reasons.
They have indeed Bertie, a second wave for sure. But Micheal’s message last night was squarely aimed at ‘people not doing their part’.
Split us up and keep us blaming each other, so they can keep going to the bank.
Some nerve trying to blame a population which by and large obeyed the initial lockdown when the government are the ones who didn’t keep to their side of the deal which was to secure extra ICU capacity.

Nice to see
I am in Melbourne. We are slowly coming out of a 100 day severe lockdown – similar to Ireland’s but the kids were not at school for most of it. One of the saddest things is that the Murdoch press and the equivalent of the Tories (the LNP) have attacked and undermined the Vic State Government and their health messages. Nasty Murdoch and cheap politics. It has made it tougher and it has made me angrier. There is division in Australia like never before. I hope Ireland can avoid this.
The fear factor being turned up. https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/gardai-to-be-given-new-powers-to-break-up-house-parties-and-issue-fines-39645889.html
Big headline ‘ Gardai to be given new powers to break up house parties and issue fines’
However, the nitty gritty says – “Gardaí will not be legally permitted to enter a home but they will be able to issue fines to the occupier of a house where an illegal party is taking place”. Yeah – right.
and
“If gardaí suspect someone is on their way to a house party or are in the vicinity of a house party which is about to begin they can direct them to leave the area in a peaceful manner.”
Did you ever read such utter idiocy?
The thing however is the establishment of a police state by stealth. A little law here, a little rule there, a mention of a fine, a ‘guidance’ here etc. etc. All adding up to a nice envelope of anti-citizen legislation which will become ‘normal’ in the not-too-distant future.
