Jesus H, shocking in Cork. The River Lee always runs high against the banks in the city. I’d have thought provisions would have been made, given the history. I worked on a conference for “Murphys” at Jurys in Cork City – there was a pedestrian bridge to the hotel (circa 1998) across The Lee – I did think the river level was perhaps a tad close to the undercarriage of the bridge? It’s not entirely eco-friendly, but regular dredging is the only on-going solution to avoid flooding – the alternative is flood banks, which cost a fortune and not a guaranteed solution (I studied Civil Engineering as a degree 35 years ago -didn’t finish…). The North has been in “Lock-down” since last Friday (I live here), generally, people respect the rules/laws(unclear). I hope Na Gardaí aren’t too busy.

    1. Junkface

This happens so often in Cork city that I thought they would consider rebuilding their entire flood defense walls. Look what New Orleans had to do after that Hurricane.

  2. Shayna

I just had a thought – isn’t The Jack Lynch Tunnel prone to flooding closure? Shayna rests her case.

…probably was Varadkar but he gets to stand on the sidelines making pronouncements…shaping decisions, without actually taking them…bet he can’t believe his luck…

    1. SOQ

Interesting bit of backside covering by Varadkar- that hospitals are not over run and that it is just people who are afraid to attend- no mention of all the services that have postponed or cancelled of course.

The focus right now is on the sickness and body count of CoVid-19 (with more than from) but that is going to be dwarfed by the sickness and body count of postponed or cancelled services.

And when the figures for that do come in- who will be held responsible?

      1. Formerly known as @ireland.com

SOQ – the death toll and ICU cases are rising. At what numbers do you decide it is a good idea to fight the virus, not pretend it doesn’t exist? It certainly makes sense to avert a disaster, not wait till there is one. It is easier beat it when the numbers are lower.

          1. Formerly known as @ireland.com

If I need a bridge built, I will be sure to check out Ivor’s videos. For viruses, I like to trust people who know what they are talking about:

            https://www.burnet.edu.au/covid-19//36_know_c19_hub

There is even a YouTube video on that page, since that seems to be your thing.

I don’t see why the “rising slowly” statement is important to you. There is a finite amount of hospital capacity in every country. That is why all countries are acting.

          2. SOQ

The rising slowly is very important because it means the virus has a lot less hosts to infect. It is also important because it suggests the virus is following the same seasonal pattern as other viruses and is burning out because of community immunity.

That is not the case in Australia of course because it has yet to have its first wave.

As for Ivor- you are entitled to your views but there are plenty to disagree with you. Nearly 4300 people felt strongly enough to sign the the petition for him to appear on The Late Late Show- and growing daily- I cannot remember that ever happening before.

          3. Formerly known as @ireland.com

Epidemiolists don’t need a petition to get heard. What makes Ivor special. There is very little immunity anywhere in the world. There is more testing and care has improved, so the death rate may be lower. However, there is still a finite amount of hospital capacity. You don’t wait for it to be 100% full, you act early.

        TL;DR
        (a) contact tracing and quarantining didn’t work for plague or cholera in the 19th century, so it shouldn’t be used for a virus in the 21st.
        (b) some false positives
        (c) some people will lie about contacts (e.g. illicit trysts)
        (d) we need to get to herd immunity, so stop limiting the spread of covid

        1. SOQ

I just don’t understand why some people cannot get seem to this- community immunity has been preventing the spread of viruses since the begining of time.

It is not a strategy- it is a biological FACT. As to whether it happens on its own or with the aid of a vaccine is another story but one way or another- it will happen with SARS-Cov-2.

As for not limiting the spread- that is just media spin- nobody is suggesting that it should just ‘let rip’- protect the vulnerable PROPERLY and let the low risk continue with their lives as normal as possible.

It is an entirely sensible and balanced approach which will for the most part limit the collateral damage.

          1. benblack

Common Sense always trumps bad law.

However, sociologists have observed the inverse during Trumpian times.

            Strange times.

Another bad faith response from Cian. Why are you resorting to such an underhanded form of discussion?

          (a) strawman representation of discussion about contact tracing in history

          (b) false positives are just ONE of the various problems discussed with the PCR testing technology

          (c) it’s not just that some people will lie about their contacts, it’s that contact tracing introduces a disincentive for people to get tested in the first place when the possibility of a positive test will mean that not only themselves but friends, family and co-workers may also be subjected quarantine. The reality is we don’t live in a society where every one has a completely collectivised mindset and will always be willing to make sacrifices where there may be little benefit to themselves or their own immediate group

          (d) you just completely made that one up for good measure. Herd immunity isn’t even mentioned in the article

          1. SOQ

Another bad faith response from Cian. Why are you resorting to such an underhanded form of discussion?

Because he is a deceitful Queen who is paid to be so.

Probably with an eye watering mortgage on a rabbit hutch over looking the quays.

          2. Formerly known as @ireland.com

Melbourne here. There are some big outbreaks because the people who were positive did not tell the truth, did not provide full details, to contact tracers. There is no way you can trace if you don’t have the facts. As for community immunity – unfortunately, the facts (remember them) don’t support this.

Last minutes of Nphet refer to Sept. 24th.

    Interestingly, mentioned at this meeting
    “Minutes of previous meetings
The minutes of 31st August and 3rd September had been circulated to the NPHET in advance of the meeting. These were agreed to and formally adopted by the NPHET.”

That suggests either that they had no meetings between 3rd September and 24th September, or that they couldn’t be bothered their a.se recording them.

Ms Kemi Badenoch, Women and Equalities Minister in the UK on Critical Race Theory being taught in schools, how it teaches kids that black people are victims and white people have inherited guilt among other rubbish… says that this teaching of a political movement as fact both partisan and breaking the law.

Full speech in UK House of Commons – https://youtu.be/pqBTWPl-11U

    Short version…

    https://twitter.com/calvinrobinson/status/1318624835937931265?s=09

Critical Theory is a regressive disease of the mind dressed pseudo academic talk. Call it what it is, racism from Leftists promoting segregation with the the intent of dividing people.

    Fair play to Ms Badenoch!

    1. Junkface

I saw this on twitter last night. She gave an incredible speech! It’s so important that this makes it onto the news and into people’s living rooms, everybody needs to get familiar with the woke nonsense of critical race theory, especially as they are trying to indoctrinate kids with this rubbish in schools. It’s so divisive as an ideology, it does the opposite of what they think because they never completed their own research for any of this, there’s no data or facts behind their books and papers. At least some politicians are aware of it.

      1. bisted

…surely that only applies to what is lovingly referred to as blighty…here the schools are mostly run by the catholic church and kids get to learn proper stuff…like talking snakes and changing wine into the blood of 2000 year old carpenters…

        1. Junkface

It applies everywhere there is a democracy unfortunately, I get your point about Catholicism, I grew up with all of that nonsense and contradictions. Critical race theory is very divisive for kids and teens from different ethnic backgrounds and sows misinformation and confusion into their minds and changes their behaviour towards one another in a divisive way. Leading to segregation in colleges for different skin colours (really, this has happened in the US). The opposite of what MLK preached for a better world of equality and opportunity for all.

      1. Clampers Outside

She correctly states, this is political and partisan, not an educational or other perspective like a non-white view of history, but a partisan and political one.

          1. Clampers Outside

Lol! What’s that supposed to mean ffs, that’s where such matters are discussed. Is that supposed to be you making a point.. Bwahahaha! Jaysus! :)

          2. Nigel

‘Is that supposed to be you making a point.. ‘

Yes. It’s funny the ideas you pick as too dangerous for sunlight, and the people you agree with.

          3. Clampers Outside

            Thou dost project too much.

No ideas are too dangerous for sunlight, in that all ideas can be debated. Especially the daft and / or dangerous ones. Even those daft ones you advocate for.

          4. Clampers Outside

“Yes” you say… Well, its an idiotic one. It’s like pointing out a kitchen is where one would cook, when the discussion was the recipe… :)

          5. Clampers Outside

It’s breaking the law because it is partisan.
That doesn’t mean it cannot see sunlight and be discussed in the UK parliament (and shown up for the racist idea that CRT has been shown to be in discussions in the US).

      2. Junkface

But the problem is, even with something like the “1619 project” they (woke writers) failed to do proper research and got their own ancestral history wrong. There are African history professors from Ghana and Nigeria who have also said so. If you write up something historical in nature, at least do correct research and use truth as your guide. Here’s Coleman Hughes doing a critique of Ibram Kendi’s ridiculous woke book on anti racism, and challenging him to debate the facts.

    Update on Pastry Week

Not much to see tbh, all three challenges we’ve kinda seen before (see below)
and my old nemesis Choux popped up

Just a quick word on Linda who left the tent
She had to go, she never stepped off that bottom rung from the Signature, and she made the rookiest of rookie errors of not sticking to the specific and essential items that define the bake in the Signature

All I want to say is she had a fantastic demeanour all the way through to this point
she never squelched, melted or teared up

and shrugged off her bad bakes as offerings to the baking Gods
and she never feared the Judges
    in her own words HeyHo
Only Selassie could shrug off a bad bake with such good humour
This is the type of baker you want to be folks

Here’s what I had to say about pastry before, tis pretty much all in there

Am thinking about doing a Lockdown Challenge with Choux
I’ll wait probably until Nelly is on hand – might try an do a video thing
