LiR – Wickerman.
Thanks to all our readers who entered last week’s Golden Discs music competition to find the most underrated Irish music since 1960.
This week, we will be featuring some of the entries that almost but didn’t quite make the cut for the Top 3.
Andy Pipkin chose this song by the “totally underrated” 1990s Dublin band LiR (top) from their 1995 album Nest. Alas, LiR split up after falling out with their management.
Dave McGuinness went on to helm the I Heart… tribute band; bassist Rob Malone played with David Gray; and drummer John Boyle joined The Frames.
Nick says: King LiR.
cool new format.
well done Andy,Boyler was with Picture House, which he left to go on tour with Marianne who was touring,North America with her duets album, most whom joined her onstage and backstage in NY.
Marianne had a residency at Irving Plaza on that tour, during NY fashion week, which attracted the likes Calvin Klein,Kate Moss and pretty much every chic rock n roll model in NY….good times backstage..the infamous yeah yeah I’m with the band:)
the fall-out between Lir and its management was a big pity – and desperately acrimonious
a friend of mine made a film about it, which was all set for the independent film festival circuit. unfortunately, while the band loved the film, the management didn’t – and it went legal and messy. upshot was that no festival would touch it. it’s worth watching:

it’s called Good Cake, Bad Cake: The Story of Lir
Great film
Thanks for the link

Watched that last night – very good doc.
Mystify: Michael Hutchence on Netflix is another good doc.
Wasn’t into either, at the time – TBH, never heard a LiR track – but really enjoyed both documentaries.
Being a Donaghmede man also involved with bands, LiR were the band we all looked up to growing up.
Even though they were only a few years older than us, they were unbelievable live.
They still rank as one of the best bands I’ve ever seen live.
ah almost neighbors !
did you go to The Grove Micko ?
Careful Micko, you’ll get a backdated paternity suit for a hairyarséd teenager!
it’s downy fluff
The Grove?
I did indeed. Sure it was practically mandatory;-)
I had the membership card, I’d say our paths have crossed so ;)
Brilliant band!
Your parish priest knows his poo.
Shame things ended they way they did with the band, but all went on too do well.
Robbie Williams 2nd on the right ‘n all.
