I loved flying on the Aer Lingus 747…Boston,New York,Lebanon…great aircraft, the Queen of the sky…sadly no more, only freighters flying now.
My first trip to Dublin airport was on a school trip. It was up there in a Boland’s bus, and one of the sights was a B-17 bomber there. In a situation that probably would not be allowed now for health and safety reasons, not to mention that fewer of them are flying, we were allowed run around it on the tarmac, but not allowed into it.
We also got a tour of the tower which was not as exciting as I expected from films.
We also got a quick flight down to Shannon. At that time, it was the only airport outside the US that did pre-clearance for entry to there, so the plane would hopscotch from Dublin down there, and meet its main passenger load for the journey over. My first time in a 747.
It was almost disappointing to realise that Boland’s bus beat us to Shannon. But it was an interesting ride home.
He’s biscuit, that bus driver :)
Ah feck… ^some biscuit… dang it!
He is a legend. His bus was a legend.
And someone tried to throw me out of of the rear emergency exit door on the way to Offaly. He did not stop, and when I asked him why when we finally got there he said well, you got back in.
I did a school trip to Shannon too. Down on the jumbo and back on the bus and train. First time on a plane for most of us. The only reason those planes went to Shannon was because the law said they had to. A job creation scheme for the wesht. Bad for everyone else, except school tours.
Two Boeing 747s (exact versions unknown) and a 737-200.
