Forty Foot, Sandycove, County Dublin last week
Listeners got in touch to complain about large numbers of sea swimmers in their area ‘The dry robe crowd that gather every morning are such an arrogant entitled crew making old people walk out on the street to avoid them’ What do you think? @andreagilligan wants to hear from you pic.twitter.com/D3fcNQN3jF

My reading of it is some people regard it as their swimming cove and resent all newcomers who have discovered the joys of sea swimming during the pandemic.
For instance, last week I went for a swim and heard one woman in the changing area along the gable-end huffing and puffing loudly to her cronies about people being too close to her, flouting the Covid rules. Yet, despite a sign that says clearly ‘swim and go’, she thought nothing of whipping out her flask and scones after drying off and looked as if she was there for the day.
I’ve also had a woman strike up a conversation with me to bitch about swimmers in dryrobes (‘dryrobe types’ whatever that means) which are totally practical in this weather. Thankfully, I don’t have one but might get one if I continue to swim as temperatures dip.
treat yo self Lilly, get this on back.
“I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?”
Outrage from SCD, do people not ‘offer it up’ anymore?
Ah have a heart, is it not punishment enough that they look forward to swimming around in the general public’s excrement each morning? ;)
Andrea looking for some radio click bait. Desperate times in Newstalk.
…surfers are worse,LOCALS ONLY,means stay the fook away from that break, beach and THEIR waves,or else…
i think its fantastic,i stopped last few days like my heart almost did,but prior have been swimming daily when at beach, without wetsuit, but its really extreme on your ba…no it is,oh my..
what are dry robes?
It’s like a towel that you wear like a poncho. Scandalous.
-it probably started with surfer envy, surfers use ‘towly’ colourful, fun board bags that ‘convert’ to ‘dry robes’ to transport/protect boards, like this.
…Handmade / Hand sewn board bags from Portugal and Mexico. Independently crafted, and never mass produced….

So just so we’re clear, the people who are arrogant and entitled aren’t the people ordering others to get out of their way, give up their hobby and stop using dry robes?
Got it.

Sea swimming is invigorating and healthy.
Shame on the regular dippers giving out about the new or occasional dippers.
Dublin is so full of grumpy, self-righteous cliques at times. In all walks of life. Or indeed, swims.
Totally agree.
But as a newcomer, the regulars have been nothing but friendly and enthusiastic to me! Mostly in Seapoint.
Fun, welcoming atmosphere in Seapoint alright. Good in Sandycove too, generally. Just a few grumpy boots who have to be moaning about something.
In fairness it’s probably because you have no legs.
I tink it’s terrrrrible Joe and dad we should hang dem.
I could be wrong here but is there not acres and acres of coastline all up and down the side of the country? There’s no need for the crowd coming from far and wide to all bunch up at the Forty Foot. In fact I know for absolutely certain, because I used to drink cans there of an evening, that there’s a lovely little bit of pebbly beach at the bottom of the cliff about30 seconds walk further on than the Forty Foot and you never see anyone swimming there, because it doesn’t have a trendy hashtag associated with it. Or you could go down to Bullock harbour, or heaven forbid you go 5 minutes closer to Dun Laoghaire and use the steps along the seafront at Glasthule specifically designed for the sole purpose of giving people access to the sea so they can swim.
Wink, are you trying to drown us?
