in fairness, the next election wont be – or doesn’t have to be – until mid 2024, so a poll in january 2021 doesnt count for much

      1. bisted

…in fairness, a poll in Jan 2024 wouldn’t mean much either…unless it showed the tories winning by a landslide in which case Boris would be worried…

        1. Brother Barnabas

would it make any real difference? would brexit have gone any differently had, say, jeremy hunt been at the helm? I doubt it

          1. V AKA Frilly Keane

            Nah
Shur’ the Tories will still have their 80 seater majority to see them thru till closing time

I’m betting Borista will step down himself
And get back onto the G£avy train
Shur’ tis costing him a fortune there
Between loss of earnings and the costs of accomodation in No 10 being deducted from his wages

I wouldn’t say he’s all that better off than Anne Rabbitte

        2. bisted

…you are probably right again V…just saw the end of Andrew Marr on TV where he asked Boris if he intended to stay on as PM and he said yes*

*hint: how can you tell Boris is lying?
          …he’s always lying…

      1. V AKA Frilly Keane

        No reminders needed Charage
I’m actually looking forward to seeing how they shape up over the next 18 months
And a leadership contest with Priti flinging jaysus knows what at Gove

But the real craic is going to be with the DUP over the next year
Let’s see how they spin the old State Collision this time
Since that’s all they’ve left to poor mouth about

2021 is going to be a great year for local political conniptions
Even here in Fianna Fail .·´¯`(>▂<)´¯`·.

Patel would say that Britain will be safer outside EU, wouldn’t she. Anyone can see that there is zero upside to Brexit. How people like her are running Britain is beyond me. She is doing a good job making Irish unity happen sooner.

      1. Formerly known as @ireland.com

Fair point. The people who support Brexit would not see it as an upside. Putin is the main winner of Brexit.

A comedy piece with Aengus McGrianna reading a joke news item complete with video informed us
‘In a shocking revelation this year, God became the latest figure to be implicated in ongoing sexual harassment sandals.
The 5 billion-year-old stood accused of forcing himself on a young middle-eastern migrant and impregnating her against her will, before being sentenced to two years in prison, with the last 24 months suspended.’

These religious types take themselves seriously, don’t they. It is time for god and all religion to be removed from Irish life. The Angelus should go.

    2. Kate

I’m Catholic and have a sense of humour but it was ill thought out – then againI I’d expect nothing better from polluted RTE. “Stars” my asre.

      1. bisted

…ill thought out, you say Kate…as opposed to the systematic rape, neglect, abuse and torture perpetrated on children by your catholic religious…that was well thought out…institutionalised and systemic even…

      1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

well he’s just a prophet …not actually Allah, unlike Jesus who is supposed to be devine,
but it’s all the same mythology at it’s root, so essentially your point is moot

        1. Fergalito

Jaysus was real, went viral and the whole thing took on a life of its own. A bit like an artist who dies in poverty and is then discovered posthumously.

Hard to separate the truth from all of the the flights of fancy but an interesting subject from a purely historical point of view..

I think it is 10 years away. If Scotland votes for independence, then the English will have no interest in keeping a failed entity that costs it money it can’t afford and where 50% don’t identify as being part of their “nation”. Enough unionists will be pragmatic enough to see a brighter future in an Ireland that is progressive. Ireland needs to be flexible. Creating some kind of ‘union’ with an independent Scotland may be enough to give unionists a sense of connection with their roots. Joining the Commonwealth is not a big deal. It would be good to have a flag that is more different to Italy’s.

        1. Jake38

          2 questions re unification………..

          1) Do you want to pay the dole handouts they currently get from the UK paxpayer?

          2) Have you had a good look at the inhabitants of say Larne, or West Belfast?

          1. Charger Salmons

More importantly it’s automatically assumed that in a border poll a majority of NI Catholics would vote for a unified Ireland.
As much as I wish they would I have my doubts – free healthcare and being part of the 5th largest economy in the world versus joining a largely irrelevant and unimportant member of the EU ?
I’m not even sure there’d be a majority in Ireland either.
I can’t recall a united Ireland ever being a topic of real conversation in my local. The idea of joining up with the north seems to fill my pals with horror and they’d rather not talk about it.
Still, it’s gives the beret boys on here a nightly wet dream

          2. bisted

…following the example of comrade Putin when he was invited back to the Crimea Region…his very first action was to give the inhabitants of the liberated zone parity of benefits such as pensions the same as those enjoyed by their Russian neighbours…the average state pension is at least one third higher in the South, even allowing for currency differences…

…I used to travel round Ireland a lot and at every opportunity I would encourage visitors to go to Belfast…not to be overwhelmed by the welcome they would receive…if you asked directions of anyone in Belfast they would insist on taking you there…North, South, East and West…well, maybe not South…

…take your point about Larne though…

          3. V AKA Frilly Keane

            None of that matters

            At all

Ireland is going to be an All Island Nation by 2030
The costs and the undertaking is neither here nor there
It’s what we’ve always being about

And by the looks of it
It’ll be a Fine Gael Sinn Féin achievement

          4. Charger Salmons

‘ The costs and the undertaking is neither here nor there ‘

And she really thinks that …

            *roll-eyes*

          5. Brother Barnabas

the reunification of germany made no economic sense, yet it happened

the division of Czechoslovakia amounted to economic suicide by the slovaks, yet they went ahead with it

brexit made no economic sense, yet
            52% wanted it

so how is frillzer’s comment so ridiculous?

          6. bisted

…sorry V…you’ve got this one completely wrong…it’s payback time for the North…do you think for a minute people would swap NHS for HSE…NIHE for the omnishambles of housing…DOE Water for Bored Uisce…Mr Patten will sort out a nice Hong Kong style deal…and who pays…they’ll be queuing up to pay…and that’s only the white economy!

          7. Formerly known as @ireland.com

The Brits can keep paying for 50 years, a la other arrangements.

The West Belfasters will get a message when Scotland leaves the union. The English/British need to send them a message that the jig is up. Some compromise is requiredon the Irish part. They can keep their British citizenship if they want, etc.

It’s not so much about what was stolen but how they were stolen. A smash-and-grab on Grafton street is quite an unusual occurrence.

If a Canada Goose jacket is a migratory bird, maybe Birdwatch Ireland experts can help the Gardai to the areas they migrate to, their nesting places and food sources. They must not shoot them as they are a protected species.

i see ivor cummins has added a patreon call-out to his ‘analysis videos’

…that RTE broadcasts a call to prayer twice a day, that the church still controls health and education shows the distance still to travel towards anything resembling a secular society…

    2. GiggidyGoo

I think the Angels should go too. When my dog was a pup, we used to bring her out for a short walkies at 6pm most evenings. The angelus was on either the TV or the radio.

now, 7 years on, and not bringing her out at that time for at least 5 years, she goes dull every time she hears it. We have to be proactive and turn down the TV in advance.

Same thing with the music from end of coronation street – same reason.

      1. millie bobby brownie

The Coronation St music is enough to suck the life out of even the liveliest of pups. Awful dirge.

        1. Nigel

I read somwhere that after the opening, the Coronation Street music and the music from The Godfather are pretty much the same, but I can’t remember the Corrie music so I don’t know if it’s true.

..a ritual to control,Adhan, the Muslim call to prayer Barechu, the Jewish call to prayer,Church bells, the Christian call to prayer.
i’d replace it with pretty much anything David Holmes has done on Killing Eve,my suggestion for 6pm loud:)

“Tapia charged, during an exclusive interview with The Sunday Gleaner last week, that almost eight months after he took office in September 2019, then chief executive officer (CEO) at Digicel, Allison Cole-Philbert, admitted that the telecoms firm was aware that the Chinese were listening in on his mobile calls.

And, without hesitation, he answered “yes” when asked if he believes that cell phone calls made by Jamaicans are being intercepted by Chinese and other interests.

This is being facilitated through Digicel’s use of Chinese-made Huawei technology across its network, according to the American emissary, who, in shedding diplomatic tact last year, labelled China “a dragon with two heads”.

What is an example of cognitive dissonance?

..i do worry about Eamo’s short term memory, its appears he has some neurological issues, the pathological lying and extreme mendacious behaviors ,type guy steal your drugs, then ‘help’ you look for them.

“In their recommendations to the government’s National Drug Strategy, the Green Party have called for legalising the medical use of cannabis and decriminalising drug use.”

Greenwash party hypocrite Eamon Ryan has learnt well from his FFG masters. Lie and make a promise to the electorate, break the promise and collect a pension along with 30 pieces of useless bicycle lanes.

      1. johnny

..stupidly i thought he was leader of a rational and modern GREEN party, opposing this legislation before he’s even read it-HAHAHA

c’mon Eamo fact based decision making and policies, mehole.

he’s going burn it all down, ambition over principals, how noble and green, what a warrior.

wft is he on anyway-bad Kombucha-he FEELS on behalf of IRELAND oh my…

“….the Transport Minister has indicated that the Greens won’t back the People Before Profit motion next year as he feels Ireland is not ready to legalise cannabis”

thanks Milly ( you’re a brave lady for throwing it in the mix all the same ;) )

      Jeasus. That’s some story.

Kinda puts things in perspective alright.

I wonder when the husband knew though.

She seems to have come to terms with the whole thing though.

Very clever headline in the Sun there. The scorpions recorded a version of Fox on the Run in the mid 70s In German under the name the Hunters. A pretty obscure reference. But impressive. Mind you Hardcore Rock? I love them and have everything they’ve done from 1972 to 2018 but hardcore they are not. https://youtu.be/B45v5UPQFDM

Reviews of the first Rosslare to Dunkirk ferry are in and they’re positive.

“With his lorry decked out with Irish, French and EU flags, truck driver John Carroll was among the first to alight from the maiden DFDS direct sailing from Rosslare Europort in Co Wexford to Dunkirk in northern France.

“It was great,” said Carroll, who works for DG McArdle International, of his overnight journey. “It may have taken a bit longer, but I’ll be at my delivery point in Germany by 9pm tonight…We’re feeling well-rested and ready for the drive ahead.”

Tom Bermingham was another of the 65 truckers who made the trip on the Danish shipping company’s vessel.

“We’re fresh and well-fed, it was a great service,” he said. “We were wrecked before Christmas after being stuck in the chaos at Dover. We’ve avoided all the hassle of driving through the UK.”

Eoin Gavin, who runs a transport company based in Bunratty, said he had “three trucks stranded all last week” because Irish Ferries’ services into Cherbourg were fully booked.

“We’d have been in an awful mess if it hadn’t been for the direct sailings into Dunkirk.”

Gavin said that in order to use the landbridge he would need to navigate six different IT systems.

“Would you do all that, without taking into account Covid tests and potential delays, or just drive down to Rosslare and hop onto a direct sailing to France?” he asked.“

yup, for those continental drivers from what I can see it’s a complete no-brainer and will only improve the more it gets used

I’d be interested to see what it’s doing to Dublin-Holyhead numbers already, I have a relative working at M&S and their stuff coming in via Scotland/NI route…

Great to hear the HSE has put the word “woman/women” back on their published cervical check info.
