Beautiful documentary on Marian Finucane, RTE1 tonight, narrated by the Beckettian John Clarke. Love is the shared secret hatred of turnips.
I’m sure she was a nice woman but her radio show was rubbish considering she was one RTE’s highest-paid performers.
Money for old rope dialled in most weekends.
A female Gerry Ryan.
His memoir is a great read.

Enjoyed it very much. RTÉ don’t do a lot right but they do some damn fine documentaries.
+1
The Famine one a few weeks ago was excellent.
Of course the €2bn children’s hospital will be cladded in the same deathtrap materials as Grenfell because of all the millions wasted on it, they wouldn’t want to waste a few grand on a safer option!
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/nov/23/grenfell-firm-stretched-truth-with-fire-safety-claims-ex-worker-says
3 billion + 1 more in overs
+1 p.a. to run
But shur’ what’s a billion here and there with Governance and Accountability like ours
+1 p.a. to run
any evidence of this?
I can see “The annual operating cost of the new hospital in 2023 will be €366m, compared to around €333m currently for the three individual children’s hospitals.”
But the new hospital should provide additional/better services (e.g. greater capacity and single rooms rather than wards)
https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/health/new-childrens-hospital-will-cost-an-extra-35m-to-run-37834032.html
That article is nearly 2 years old….how much was the final cost of the hospital back then?
Indeed. That is why I was asking V to back up her claim.
I don’t have to back it up Cian
I have actually seen how payroll works in a Hospital + Super Ann
and what it costs, and what it is going to cost for the next two generations to die + their spouses
I have actually seen how HR works and functions in a Hospital
I actually know what Nursing actually means, does and contributes in a Hospital
I actually know the Pay -Non Pay IMR process
Plus the DashBoard
plus the Case Mix and how to get more in the allocation next year by posting such n’ such a treatment as this such n’ such a treatment, and have it taken from another hospital in the group
I also know how a simple procedure can end up costing the Irish taxpayer up to 12 times more than in a private setting
I actually know what happens at Hospital Executive meetings
I actually know what happens at Hospital Board meetings
I actually know what happens at Hospital Consultants meetings
I actually know what happens at Hospital Project Meetings
I actually know how much it costs to get a fire escape added on, that nobody can access anyway
I actually know how it takes 2 weekend days for two maintenance staff to drill a hole to take a network cable in an off site office
Or to change light bulbs
I actually know what gets posted into the Non Pay “Sundry Expenses” oopps
I actually know the real cost of absentees, rostering sick leave,
I actually know what the “medical costs” account is for
I actually know what “the Friends of ….” actually do and get
I actually know the real cost of running a hospital
I have actually seen how Hospitals are run, financed, and how costs actually get reported back to the HSE
I am your back up Cian
And I am telling you it will cost the Irish Taxpayer 1 b pa to run that hospital
Because it will NEVER be at anything over 60 % capacity or at 70% of full complement
AND SWEET FA In private health insurance
Ohh Ohh
I thought so.
what a long-winded way of saying: “no, I can’t back it it up as such; am just speculating”
Ah look
Ye buddied up
isn’t that dotey
Like the Kerry Twin Towers that time – but in-between gowling and fowling they did get some decent scores off the back lines
anyway, shoulder to shoulder now boys
there is no back up because nobody knows – not even the Project Teams or the Contractors or the intended CEO/ Managers
Nobody knows
But let me tell ye that that hospital is going to come in well over 3 billion, I’m going to actually tip it over the 4 bill
and that’s just the building, add the James’ top up, the making good the site access and surroundings, and the residents etc for the disruption and discomfort
We all know the site was working beyond its permitted agreement with DCC
those fines and settlements aren’t going to be like getting an on the spot
And will end up with a facility that never be at full capacity or at full staffing
And it is a facility had will be 99% occupied by Medical Card holders
Unless they can sell procedures to foreign patients
but to do that they will need at least 10 years of expertise building in whatever discipline ie. heart transplants in preemies
hey ye never know
ye might just have to find me to tell me I’m wrong in about —say ten years
and I’m sure Broadsheet will still be harbouring a few who’ll only be happy to join in and put the boot in
I’m sure they’ll be plenty about happy to organise it
That land swap plan (Our Ladys in Crumlin with DCC’s Teresas Gardens doesn’t seem so silly now. But a least we know why Lisney’s had a director on the board then)
@V
yes, the build costs are too high.
But none of that addresses why it will cost “+1 p.a. to run”
It will continue to offer a similar range of services that the existing 3 hospitals do. It will have the same “99% medical card holder” clientele. It will have similar occupancy levels (unless the number of children decreases significantly). It will have similar staffing and pension levels.
We’ll see
And I’m sure you’ll have no shortage of help around here reminding me I’m wrong when it comes to it
Meantime
Why don’t you compare the cost of cardiac surgery in an adult facility
Versus
A pediatric
w(°o°)w
And wait’ll you see ICU costs
The first of today’s 5 D’s Cian?
Happy New Year to you GiggidyGoo!
You too Cian :-)
lol Cian
promote it up all you like but that place is an FFG supermassive black hole economic disaster whatever way you look at it
the numbers are SO bad you’ll never ever “normalize” it so please…for all our sakes stop trying to because it just makes you just look silly
They are going to ‘monitor with interest’ the case in the UK. Instead, they could be looking at different materials, but that’s more than their jobs worth probably. And it would probably add another billion in penalties etc. from BAM

Did you get the call up for the jab yerself?
About August I reckon.
No need. You have no Zinc deficiency.
There are many zinc-dependent enzymes in our body and deficiency has been linked with immune dysfunction. Zinc-rich foods include beans, seeds, nuts, meat, poultry and seafood.
Here’s a few more questions the Irish media should be asking, courtesy of Bild.
Health ministers in EU’s pharma powers Germany, France, Italy & Netherlands joined forces to obtain vaccines for the bloc but their leaders forced them to abdicate responsibility to the Commission, which then failed to get enough doses.
The EU, population 450m, is now stuck with only 200m BioNTech-Pfizer and 80m Moderna jabs until the autumn (at best).
On November 11, when it was clear the Pfizer vaccine was the market leader, the EU ordered 200m doses, with an option for another 100m.
On November 17 the EU ordered 400m doses of a vaccine from CureVac, a German company that hadn’t even started phase 3 trials. Why?

Did ye ever think ye’d see the day
Da used to get his poitin sent down in holy Mary statue bottles, you know the one the head comes off , I think they usually have holy water in ?
I have vague recollections of exciting border trips to Newry and Inniskeen with my da 3 or 4 times a year
the bottles of the “schtuff” plus tyres, kitchen electricals, tellys….
the tellys had to be brought in to a telly repair shop in Drumcondra to have something done to them so they would work down here (or at least that’s what I was told, lol)
the holy mary plastic statuette bottles, the screw on cap was her blue halo/crown yoke if I remember correctly? as for quality control it was VERY important to know the right source or you could go blind, apparently :)
yep ethanol the by product can make you blind, it can also send you into a three day comma, the real origin of the Irish wake according to some sources
I was told their particular version of the good schtuff involved orange peels in the process…though I suspect there was a lot of deliberate use of mystique and fable where poitin was concerned…there’s plenty of recipes out there and they don’t look terribly difficult to execute to me
poitin wouldn’t be my cup of tea really anyway, too harsh
yes too young
Loving the video segment at the end. Well done, John and Derek. Really enjoyable and informative.
+ 1 Great new feature. Happy New Year ‘sheeters!
Dr Michael Yeadon, a former vice president and scientific director at Pfizer, takes a look at the data for current test positivity rates in Britain (which have apparently risen sharply in a near uniform manner across the board):
‘I have never in almost 40 years of looking at complex biological data seen anything less natural than this. Thus, the entire data series is suspect’
https://mobile.twitter.com/MichaelYeadon3/status/1346248898894028802
Strong indication that something similar is happening here. New cases decoupled from fatalities long ago. There’s no correlation. No excess deaths

Ah, the great conspiracy has been revealed! The TRUTH has been uncovered! And they would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for that pesky……
What exactly do you think is happening here? Genuinely curious to know.
https://www.bbc.com/news/55017002
f_lawless has only once from what I’ve seen here let the mask slip and cite the Great Reset – so that’s it in all its barmy, loo-lah glory
also explains his (and SOQ’s) support for Trump
base strategy though is to pretend there’s no agenda or belief – rather, “just asking questions”
…far worse than looney great reset notions are the relentless campaign advocationing letting the pandemic rip through the population…what motivates someone to keep proposing dangerous nonsense…
stupidity?
SOQ actually justified this on the basis that “this is how humans have battled viruses since the beginning of time”
…I still believe that these persona have been created by Bodger…the SOQ character is particularly absurd…only Bodger could have dreamt up a bizzare individual like this and only Bodger could get of with posting some of the outrageous comments that would land us lesser mortals on the naughty step…but then…stupidity…you have a point…
But bisted you also think I’m invented by Bodger as well and a few others reckon Jane is me too.
If that’s the case why do I moderate myself so much over the most innocuous things like some manbag-carrying snowflake ?
“Jane”
heh heh heh
that’s the sort of ruse I’d attempt
….in fairness, we all know Charger is a Bodger creation…just speculating with the others…at present…
I’m afraid not, bisted.
It’s true bisted.
Bodger couldn’t afford my lifestyle.
And I don’t wear hair shirts and whip myself raw with thorns as penance for lascivious thoughts
The Great Reset is a real thing proposed by the WEF. An organisation that has received criticism on various issues over the years and deservedly so IMO.
The great reset may not be as nefarious as some propose but why the mockery for questioning its legitimacy?
I don’t suppose you took a look at the Brother’s link, Yep?
I did Millie. That’s the conspiracy which I’ve kind of stated is the nefarious part and dont agree with.
It’s still a real thing though. So if everyone stopped acting like children we could have a conversation on what it actually involves.
read it again, yep
Why don’t you tell us what it actually involves?
+1
I’d be very interested in hearing about it and, as Yep says, what it actually involves.
I don’t know Repro. Never stated that I did. Any information is vague at best.
Do you? I appreciate the tone though.
@ BB
No I dont believe the pandemic was planned. No I dont believe politicians will be forced to adopt the policies.
There is still a vague proposal from the WEF that may be adopted. Why is it crazy/stupid to question it considering who it is coming from?
because pretty much as junkface says below – yes, the Great Reset is a real, actual idea mooted at a WEF event. but – as suggested in that forum – it’s a plausible and sensible idea (but, yes, I’m a leftie who believes in climate change etc, so…). the nutjobs took the grain of the idea and developed it into this monstrous conspiracy- that’s the inane bit. and added so many ridiculous ‘facts’. a couple of these are mentioned in the linked article – the vaccine alters your DNA, made with aborted foetus cells, and only Trump can save us. and, sadly, at one point or another, each of these inanities has made it’s way into SOQ’s comments.
I do like you, Brother
It’s not vague at all. There’s reams of detail produced by the WEF on it, all of it is highly readable with a strong focus on social equity and justice, sustainability and climate change. Not one for the Trumpists admittedly.
In their own words:
https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/06/now-is-the-time-for-a-great-reset/
Thanks Otis.
…wait…don’t start explaining yet…I can’t find my tinfoil hat…right, it’s on…set critical faculties to off…carry on…
“Any information is vague at best”.
Not so. It’s all here: https://www.weforum.org/agenda/archive/the-great-reset
“Why is it crazy/stupid to question it considering who it is coming from?”
I’m not saying it’s crazy or stupid to question it. The WEF hosts think tanks on a variety of topics and this is just the latest. It’s not an instruction or a policy document. It’s a bunch of people looking at different possible ways that the world could emerge from the pandemic. There’s a lot of interesting stuff in the podcasts and articles (e.g. the public sector taking the lead in financing large scale green projects, or the need for governments to use digital technology to respond more quickly to their citizens concerns or looking at preserving rural jobs) but it’s all aspirational.
“it’s a plausible and sensible idea”
It’s all very, very vague and I think you’re naive to read what is available and think yeah the WEF really want to change the world for the better and not question how they actually plan on doing it and who will benefit most. 2 years ago far less people would back something coming from the WEF and I believe the NWO crowd have somehow softened the focus on them which is far from a positive.
Conversations here have turned to people who see conspiracy theories everywhere and others who can see conspiracy theorists everywhere. It’s all very repetitive and toxic.
I disagree with you Barnacles. I’ll leave it there. Have a good one.
the idea that what’s happened globally since March should force us to rethink how we live, how we organise society, how we regulate economy etc isnt a radical one
even before it was discussed by WEF, there were hundreds of editorials and comments within mainstream media about same idea
you think its alarming or concerning or strange that we would look to learn from this?
“It’s all very, very vague”
It’s all very, very publicly available and if it is in any way vague on detail it is only so because it is aspirational.
@ Repro
I’m well aware what is available. Thanks again for the unnecessary snide and tone. All the best.
I wasn’t being snide in my comments at all. These are just words on a screen. Any tone you assign to them is in your head.
I read a similar article to that on the ‘great reset’ a couple of weeks ago. According to that one there are some elements to the great reset that are true, like many conspiracy theories, it’s what they do with the truth that makes the difference. Usually they connect dots and make connections that are fantastical, not true, or just plain bizarre. It usually involves lizard people, George Soros, Bill Gates or Trump having altruistic values, which is insane of course.
Governments will have to find a way of breaking this grip of indoctrination on the population, and teaching them how to decipher a real article from conspiracy nonsense. We need to promote the Sciences more, critical thinking, I really hope something can be done before it really is a zombie apocalypse of eejits feeding each other nonsense.
+1
and, in addition, theres a responsibility on social media platforms to at least flag the absurdities and downright lies being spread
for example, one of the BS regulars made the claim a few days ago that the Pfizer vaccine causes Bell’s Palsy. this claim originated on facebook, went viral, before being entirely debunked. it’s completely untrue. yet this commenter nonetheless stated it as fact. what’s the purpose of that if not promote the anti-vaxx angle by scaremongering with deceit?
“one of the BS regulars made the claim a few days ago that the Pfizer vaccine causes Bell’s Palsy”
Jesus! I thought that was a joke someone made yesterday. Didn’t know it actually happened. I had to have words with someone in my own family who repeated some nonsense they read from their friends on facebook. I could not believe they were too lazy to bother looking it up from a valid scientific website, but there you go. That’s what happens.
SOQ in ‘Saturday’s Papers’
Anyone find this disturbing (if the report in the Indo is correct of course).
“Paper consent forms must be read to the residents along with the HSE information leaflet. Either a resident or a qualified health professional must sign these forms if getting the vaccine is in the best interests of the resident”
Residents with dementia? (what about Power of Attorney)
Residents that don’t want the vaccine?
Is a Nursing Hime owner a health professional? Is a care worker a health professional? … in the context of having the authority mentioned above? Are they entitled to make such a decision?
One more thought. The rejected PPE and Handwash. Is the HSE storing this, or are the suppliers?.( Given that some suppliers work from an office only). Any sign of refunds?
In the Indo Ireland’s newest MEP, Colm Markey, wonders how he’ll balance the demands of his new role with running a full-time dairy farm in Louth.
Well I’m sure the monthly salary of €8,611.31 plus pension will help.
Plus the €4,416 monthly ” general expenditure allowance ” , first-class travel expenses and a €313 daily allowance for hotel and living costs when working in Brussels and Strasbourg.
The fact that he doesn’t have to provide receipts or invoices for any of these expenses which are never made public will probably ease his worries about who is mucking out the cowshed back home.
He can monitor that from his free i-pad.
Kerching baby.
A man like yourself could easily drop 4 grand just on the white whine for lunch, never mind the Boudreaux.
I did once drop an obscene amount of money at The French Laundry.
I rather let the vino collapso go to my head but when you’re in Napa it’s hard not to.
As a rule though I think anything over €100 a head is rarely worth it.
wine is a little like diamonds the real cost has rarely little to do with it’s actual value

…you try it sometime Charger…btw…did your mate Nigel draw his EU allowances in £sterling or euro?
Nigel used his allowances to fund UKIP.
He had to pay them back eventually but what a great return on his long-term investment.
He still has rather a nice pension however.
The Brexit Party Limited does indeed appear to be a great investment for its shareholders.
(dead link removed)
Computer says no.
The link was to Companies House in London so I’m unsure why the link is not working. Anyhow, the link shows that Farage is a director and controlling shareholder of the Brexit Party Limited, a private limited company which received over £17m in private donations in the year end to December 2019.
And the Brexit Party has now asked the Electoral Commission to be allowed to change its named to Reform UK.
As a registered party with the Electoral Commission the Brexit Party is, like all other parties, obliged by law to provide audited accounts and lists of all donors over a certain amount.
Farage doesn’t draw a salary from the party.
On Sky News in May 2019, a Scottish National Party MEP, Alyn Smith, claimed that the Brexit Party is “a shell company that’s a money laundering front”. The Brexit Party threatened legal action unless Smith retracted the claim. Smith apologised unreservedly and admitted that he had no evidence for his allegation, and made a donation to the party’s legal costs as well as to the charity Help for Heroes.
And your point is ?
My point was merely to reinforce your own about the return on Farage’s long term investment.
That, and the fact that the Brexit Party Limited is structured in a fundamentally different way from other UK parties.
when the schools were open pre Christmas there was less than 400 cases.
schools closed now we have 6000 cases.
why are they keeping the schools closed?
because the risk of infection is 1500% higher
so with all the preventative measures we’ve taken the transmission rate is now 1500% more? why is that?
the risk increase by 1500% over December when the shops, restaurants and pubs were open, and people were mixing.
it isn’t that difficult to understand.
that isn’t true. pubs outside of Dublin have been open up to Christmas. I think they use to call that level 3. Dublin was on level 3.5 which I think meant no pubs except for outside pubs or pubs with food socially distanced. shops have also been opened prior to Christmas with non essential product as essential product is hard to define and even harder to police.
and yet with all these relaxations in covid restrictions we had less than 400 cases.
is that so hard to understand?
well yes it is because there is no logic to the argument for closing schools.
