The Sunday Telegraph reports that everyone aged 18 and over in the UK should be vaccinated by the end of June.
This would be a stunningly good result for Boris and total vindication of his decision last summer not to be part of what became the EU’s chaotic vaccine procurement programme.
Of course another big plus is that it frees up the people of England and Scotland to properly celebrate their team’s progress in the Euros 2020 postponed from last summer.
Not something Ireland has to worry about obvs but there will inevitably be some wistful glances across the Irish Sea as weeks of footy kicks off and Ireland is likely to still be in some sort of lockdown.
Question is though, will the games in Ireland be played without spectators or simply moved to another part of the British Isles where they’ll be allowed in.

There are some who would have you believe the EU made a mess of vaccine acquisition but, as Naomi O’Leary (not Long) lays out in this piece from yesterday’s IT, the process was in fact well thought out and learned a lot from the mistakes made during the scramble for PPE. A wider spread of sources, an insistence on the suppliers taking more liability and cheaper prices than some queue jumpers were all part of the plan. It’s even typed out for those luddites who think podcasts are some sort of witchcraft.
So well thought out that the UK and countries like Israel will have everyone over 18 vaccinated by the end of June and Ireland ‘ might ‘ reach that target by the end of the year ?
Yeah,right.
Your desperation to be an apologist for the Irish state and the EU is embarrassing.
ReproBertie
The article also looks at why some EU countries (namely Denmark) are so far ahead of others but that would require actually reading the article and we know you don’t bother gathering information before commenting. Had you done the homework you would have found ample grounds for complaint about the Irish government’s lack of planning for the vaccination rollout and reliance on outdated IT systems.
Imagine that! You could have had something concrete to complain about instead of the vague garbage you normally trot out without anything to back it up.
As of Thursday Ireland is 2nd in the EU for percentage of population vaccinated (albeit with one dose) but that’s mainly down to vaccination of healthcare staff which is straightforward. As we move on to vaccinating care homes we’ll face new difficulties. We also need vaccination centres set up, vaccinators trained, a proper schedule drawn up as well as a decent record keeping system. All of these are areas the government is lagging in and none of it is down to the “EU incompetence” you toss around without anything solid to back it up.
Apologist mo thóin.

So the UK are doing a much better job in dealing with the virus? Just some facts clown man that you just seem to ignore. The UK is 7th highest out of 221 countries in deaths per million population, and in a few days very likely to be 5th. Ireland currently lies 48th out of 221. The UK death rate is 2 1/2 times the Irish death rate. I know you’re not the sharpest knife in the drawer but even someone of your limited intelligence can see which country is doing worse. Amadán.
ReproBertie
I just realised it’s behind a paywall. Some highlights.
The 27 European Union member states pooled money to help pharmaceutical companies cover vaccine development costs. In return manufacturers agreed to deliver vaccines early for Europeans, to be distributed proportionally.
As the first BioNTech-Pfizer and Moderna deliveries arrived, a bitter debate sprang up over whether the EU had done well enough.
The European Commission was criticised for failing to finalise a contract with BioNTech-Pfizer as soon as it emerged as a promising candidate, though negotiations were slowed because not all member states were keen on it. It was based on unfamiliar technology, is relatively expensive and is logistically difficult since it must be stored at -70 degrees. Some EU countries have even turned down part of their allocation, preferring to wait for other options.
In addition, Brussels bargained hard. “The EU insisted on liability. This was the delay. That is why the contract was not signed in August. If the company makes a mistake in production, then they have to be liable,” says German MEP Peter Liese. “People are better protected after this.”
The EU bargained on price, too. Israel paid two to three times what the EU did and has agreed to share vaccination data with BioNTech-Pfizer, making the country something of a giant lab.
There’s much more but a lot of this is covered in the podcast and column I linked to yesterday
On top of the 600 million Pfizer doses and the 160 million Moderna doses, the EU has ordered 400 million doses of AstraZeneca’s vaccine as well as 400m doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine which, as it’s one shot vaccine, will be enough to vaccinate almost the entire EU population of 448 million.
All that confirms to me is the editorial policy adopted by the writers of the report and why it ended up being so flimsy on facts, truth and honest assertions.
And that that little hat tip of tokenism in the Sindo has all the looks of a paid for news advertorial

This is what happens when incompetent clowns who put profit before people are elected. Donnelly drew a breath of relief when the Mother & Babies home bucket of whitewash report was puked up by Roderic O’Gorman as it took the spotlight off him for a bit Instead of the Gardai delaying frontline workers every morning and evening commuting to work they would be better employed checking passengers at the airport instead of screwing up traffic. If ye’ve never done the baked bicarb hot bath dough dunking before
This is a great one to start with
And an added bonus is the lovely calming subtle waff off the dough as you knead the ingredients together. A nice reminder why we bake
So really worth giving it a go. Here’s the recipe https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/learn-make-pretzels
Tips from Mrs Clax(◠‿◕)
• Stick with the Dark Muscovado sugar – yes it adds to the aroma during the workout bit
• knead for the full 15 mins – and I totally agree, you can feel it getting better and better with every minute
• really do knock the air out after the 1st proof – like ‘the life n’all out of it. For a no faff no fuss baker (no patience really), or someone still growing their confidence, the air pockets do make rolling out the rope to be firm enough to do the fecky fiddly bits a chore. And you don’t want that because it’s not
Ok there’s an extra few steps with the baked bicarb and the hot water dunking. But once you’ve done it, the mystery and fear is over. Another plus for a nervous or cautious baker, is that, although a poor relation, it’s still an enriched dough, so you get to tick that off too.
And this is a dough you can do loads with. Why not swap the salt topping for cinnamon sugar, or lemon pepper or crushed praline
Apols, didn’t add
• I usually bake for 20-25 mins and then flip over and bake for maybe 4 mins as sometimes the underside can be a bit soft
The new soggy bottom – ‘the underside can be a bit soft
BTW – something I’ll be doing the next time
Is loosen the egg wash – with milk probably. And I’m not convinced it needed it anyway¯\_ʘ‿ʘ_/¯.
Up to ye

A “caustic Catholic comment” perhaps? ;-p
What a strange comment.
You’ll get used to that from that one. Nothing to add to the subject. You’ll notice that out he comes usually after a post of mine, and just comments some sort of unintelligible gumph about me, and not the subject. I’ll let you make up your own mind seeing as you’re new here.
BTW – if he makes an accusation of any sort about something he says i’ve written, just ask him for a link. He runs away very quickly from that.
I see what you mean now. He has just commented on the Monday papers, just on your comment, but not on your actual comment. he didn’t comment on anything else. You must have upset him. If that’s the style of commenting here it doesn’t say much about the mods. It’s a bit like the journal.

Brittany Ferries brings forward its Rosslare to Cherbourg ferry service.
The Brexit Busters. Stena, DFDS, Irish Ferries, CLDN, Brittany Ferries, Irish Ferries, have stepped up to the plate and have added lots of services direct to Europe. Could be the death knell for Holyhead and one of either Fishguard or Pembroke. While the queues form at Dover and Folkestone.
The ports are only the tip of the iceberg. 1.3m non UK nationals have left the UK over the past year. Mostly EU citizens retuning home. The UK will no longer attract the best and brightest of Europe. Hopefully these new ferry services will bed in and we will be in a much better place. Serious question: considering the changed circumstances, and the big increase in direct ferry services, how long before the Charles De Gaulle pays a friendly visit to Cork or Dublin ?
the CDeG is some sort of french navy ship?
Aircraft Carrier..
Proper Nuclear powered one too… unlike Lizzie’s…. well, you know.
Had a look on marinetraffic.com. Impressive.
If the lockdown is going to last until April, or beyond, people will go mad

Keep digging Begorrah.
Oh look Spoofer, someone provided some actual information that shows you to be ignorant of the details again.
Best respond with an ad hominem.
7th highest clown man.
Amadán.
Garda HQ examining report for Criminality
Ye are yah
All that confirms to me is the editorial policy adopted by the writers of the report and why it ended up being so flimsy on facts, truth and honest assertions.
And that that little hat tip of tokenism in the Sindo has all the looks of a paid for news advertorial
Like what Leo’s/ FGs spin unit used to get the local newspapers to publish that time
Noddy…again.

Interview with Stephen Donnelly this weekend. 5 minutes in, he informs us that 1500 Brazilians arrived here in the past two weeks. His message to them, today? Visit a GP and self-isolate. I’m sure they will be listening to RTE. It’s been known a few days now that there is a strain of virus from that area that is far more serious than the UK one even. – so what about the tracking/tracing? No forms completed upon arrival? Follow up calls?

This is what happens when incompetent clowns who put profit before people are elected. Donnelly drew a breath of relief when the Mother & Babies home bucket of whitewash report was puked up by Roderic O’Gorman as it took the spotlight off him for a bit Instead of the Gardai delaying frontline workers every morning and evening commuting to work they would be better employed checking passengers at the airport instead of screwing up traffic. It’s time FFFGGP were vaccinated against!

If ye’ve never done the baked bicarb hot bath dough dunking before
This is a great one to start with
And an added bonus is the lovely calming subtle waff off the dough as you knead the ingredients together. A nice reminder why we bake
So really worth giving it a go. Here’s the recipe
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/learn-make-pretzels
Definitely a keeper
Apols, didn’t add
• I usually bake for 20-25 mins and then flip over and bake for maybe 4 mins as sometimes the underside can be a bit soft
The new soggy bottom – ‘the underside can be a bit soft
BTW – something I’ll be doing the next time
Is loosen the egg wash – with milk probably. And I’m not convinced it needed it anyway¯\_ʘ‿ʘ_/¯.
Up to ye

They go really really well with a Good German Helles or Pilsner. Rascals Brewery in Inchicore do a great version called Jailbreak, and 8Degrees brewing have a lovely Pilsner called Pilgrim’s path which works really well too. I have carried out extensive research in this area.
Saw that Tartan
Thanks so much btw, well Mrs Tartan really
You’ve given the Bake’Sheeter a great project recipe to play dough with & share

I’m as far from Liz as can be got. Usually in a pair or leggings and old jumper with my dressing gown thrown over that as my kitchen is a horrible old ice box of a yoke. Think more bird woman from Mary Poppins.

Tommy Charage has been drinking his Aldi wine since last Friday and is now firmly slumped on his stained couch wearing just a Union Jack. Good news though, he’s moving back to his beloved Millwall for a better life and economic bliss. Cheerio, cheerio, cheerio…cheerio, cheerio, cheerioooooo-o!
This New York Times article may be of interest to some Broadsheet readers and contributors.
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/17/world/europe/ireland-george-gibney.html?action=click&module=News&pgtype=Homepage
Why are they reporting this now, is something about to happen?
According to the article, Lily;
“Mr. Gibney cannot be indicted again on any of the charges that were dismissed in 1994, but Irish case law changed shortly after his original charges were dropped, making it easier to prosecute new allegations of historical child sexual offenses.”
“But last month, the Irish police confirmed they were again investigating Mr. Gibney after two more former child swimmers came forward with fresh allegations against him.”
Thanks Ben. That was reported elsewhere last month, I wondered, since they’re rehashing, is there about to be an announcement about Gibney’s extradition.
Think we can expect that alright
It will interrupt the Irish News Cycle for them
Anyday after Biden in sworn in I reckon
