Build Back Soberer

Barman Charlie Yates outside the Virgin Mary with a bottle of hooch-free The Three Spriit

Yesterday.

Capel Street, Dublin.

The owner of ‘Ireland’s first alcohol-free bar’ The Virgin Mary is hoping to expand his business into the global market with a new location in the United Arab Emirates.

Vaughan Yates hopes the expansion will be part of “a global move towards drinking and socialising differently”.

Rebranded (for fairly obvious reasons) as  ‘TVM’, the new franchise will open in Abu Dhabi this Summer.

I mean, I think even people living in non-Islamic countries might find the notion of naming a business after a religious figure a little crass and disrespectful…

shhhhh… Nobody tell Rob about the oriental fast-food chain named after a Chinese dictator that was responsible for tens of millions of deaths.

so not as many deaths as the followers of god then ? :)

If the drinks were priced at the same level as a coffee shop I think this would be a grand idea. But they’re not. IIRC they were approaching 10euro a drink…for non-alcoholic drinks… No idea why anyone would pay that when they can just go to a cafe/restaurant for a non-alcoholic drink instead.

dude, in fairness i took a look at some photos of the drinks they make, fine ingredients and labour cost inputs – what do you expect price wise?

      1. Rob_G

Less than cocktails, given that cocktails require the same labour inputs, but are also made from liquids that subject to per ml duties.

They aren’t paying the massive duties on alcohol that normal cocktail bars are paying, they’re paying less for security, they’re paying nothing for a sales license… so I’d expect a price a fair bit lower than one for an alcoholic cocktail, given normal cocktail bars are paying all of the above _and_ “fine ingredients and labour cost inputs”.

booze is so expensive in pubs because of excise on alcohol.
Same excises do not apply to non-alcoholic drinks naturally.

And old Billy the blacksmith, the first time in his life
Why he’s gone home cold sober to his darling wife
He walks in the kitchen, she says you’re early Bill dear
But then he breaks down and tells her the pub’s got no beer

Absolutely amazed that this place is still going.

Fair play. I would never have though it’d last.
