Social Distance

Social Democrats co-leader Roisin Shortall and TD Holly Cairns earlier

“People have a misconception about zero-Covid. We achieved it last July when it was down to four people per day.

“Once the numbers are down you have strong border controls and a strong testing and contact tracing system It’s a short sharp lockdown, but the rewards are enormous. The alternative is the Government’s strategy of rolling lockdowns.”

It’d almost be hilarious if it wasn’t so transparently awful. SF are doing similar. They were the ones calling loudly for border closures in February, and are now giving out about aviation and tourism jobs lost and saying we need to reopen…

The opposition have been shocking throughout this whole year. They haven’t actually held the government to account on anything, or asked for any evidence based decision making.

Just you wait – some day SF will come first in a general election and everything will be different.

A political party changing its position over time based on evidence changing is expected. For example political parties coming out in favour of repealing the 8th when they had been for keeping it 5, 10 or 20 years before. That shows being open to new ideas and willing to change your positions given due consideration.

Taking two completely contradictory political positions, 2 months apart, is pure tabloid politics. It shows a political party doesn’t care for evidence based decision making, or even just having a policy on anything. They’ll never be fit to govern if they do a complete 180 degree turn on policy every few months.

In February it didn’t look likely that vaccinations would be rolled out so quickly as they have now. It’s fair to change one’s views on lockdown & quarantine if the majority of at risks are now vaccinated.

There is no true opposition in this country. This so called opposition were worse than the government with their demands for even greater restrictions on society and now they moan about the consequences of the measures the governemnt did adopt, ignoring such conseuqences would be even worse had they been in government themselves. Though, to be fair, their ignorance and idiocy makes them perfect representatives for the people of Ireland.
