Eamon Ryan in the Dáil at the Convention Centre this afternoon
During Leaders Questions, Labour’s Alan Kelly dismissed the Govt’s Covid measures as “absolutely bananas”. Minister Eamon Ryan said that the Govt wants “to sit down with stakeholders” and to look at options which “provide better protection” | https://t.co/QRuxSAYrp1 pic.twitter.com/MfxWnl1UhN

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has dismissed NPHET’s advice as “completely bonkers”. He called for an independent analysis of the advice. Eamon Ryan said it was his view that Ireland will not experience a major wave due to the measures being taken | https://t.co/QRuxSAYrp1 pic.twitter.com/CF4UUKQVuv

This afternoon.
Seems to have gone down well.
Earlier…
Madness. No plan No ambition no clue how to live with covid. Discriminatory plans to divide society and discriminate on grounds of health. We have failed utterly to balance advice with the needs of a functioning society. I despair. https://t.co/34PRXmp1ps

Earlier…
Leo Varadkar: "We only planned vaxx for travel. This is a big change, no one is delighted about but the alternative is to keep facilities closed until herd immunity and we don't know when that is. It is difficult and does have consequences and will be divisive."

Meanwhile…
Just heard @DonnellyStephen on the radio plugging vaccine discrimination in restaurants, & saying he was “advised” that unvaccinated people should NOT travel even with a negative PCR, even though they have a legal right to do so.
I felt like pinching myself. Is this for REAL?

Earlier: Delta Farce
Meanwhile…
The fully vaccinated who agree that only the vaccinated should benefit from rewards like eating inside out of the rain … how will they react this autumn when they are turned away from the same doors because their QR code shows that haven’t received their boosters? #disbandNphet

Oh,
Jaysus there will be some clamour for bouncers to keep the unvaccinated masses out.
There’s not that many of them as most people are looking to get vaccinated as soon as their age group is announced by the HSE. In reality, it’s just a handful of gobby, ratlickin’ headtheballs like Eddie Hobbs, desperate for attention by wearing their yellow star of persecution in public.

How does the govt boot taste?
This goes well beyond a few people looking to get inside their local – this is an indefinite delay to reopening of indoor dining, select indoor events and more – and its all based on some tenuous at best modelling from a group of unelected individuals, who have consistently proven to be wrong.
We are the only country in Europe to not have indoor dining opened yet, despite being above average in vaccinations administered. It is indefensible.
Who are you replying to? My comment has nothing to do with yours.
His reply was to Gorugeen, not you.
@ Daisy – I don’t think anyone wants to engage with you save to perhaps espouse the benefits of euthanasia.
Now even I am breathless as that sharp sista slap down- go you E’Matty.
Threatening murder on me now, eh E’Mad? Your angry stalking of me has escalated to a dangerous level.
Have you tried seeking professional help for your obvious problems?
Lol, you’re the most obnoxious Commenter on the site.
Admins am I alone in that I find the persistent bullying of commenters like SOQ and Daisy rather objectionable? Yesterday a commenter even openly said that SOQ’s mental health appeared to be somewhat difficult to evaluate- please can we eradicate this kind of thing? It’s an occasional blight on an otherwise excellent site! This guy General Public for example has reappeared in several guises only to be banned every time.
Must be a holiday in Can a da, admins, please take note.
Hyper real please do not group me with Daisy Chainsaw
I try to be respectful of other people’s opinions and attempt to have grown up conversations- Daisy Chainsaw on the other hand, does the exact opposite.
+1
When your back up is worse than your bullies, Hyper and admins, please take notes.
Ha!!!!!
A bouncer must have received training and have back ground checks before they can get a license- its the law. There is a limited number of licensed security personnel in the country. There is nowhere near enough to cover this trebling- if not more- of doors to be managed.
More over, expect a lot of extra friction with punters – if someone refuses to leave, what then? Normal staff are not allowed to act as security and could find themselves up on GBH charges double quick and, if one gets badly injured attempting to do so- the employers liability insurance will not cover it.
There is guaranteed to be legal challenges to this from a number of different directions- it is an absolute mess, and the last thing people trying to get their small independent businesses back up and running need.
Incompetence doesn’t even begin to describe it.
I think they should get some advice from Denmark or something. They really messed this up. Maybe they would try harder if all of their pay was cut for a few months, they would see how important it is to allow people to earn money again.
+1 for this idea
All TDs to get PUP-rates only until the emergency is lifted.
absolutely, let them eat beans
I had possibly the best cassoulet I have ever eaten a couple of years back at a spot called Le Violon d’Ingres in Paris.
The perfect bean-feast for the Irish politician.
stop I’m already homesick
Too warm for that now surely? Winter
Food? I have a load of sausage I’ve cooked though and probably won’t eat otherwise- can I improvise with that?
Broadsheet, can ye post Varadkers “Herd Immunity” threat from earlier today please??
we’re being played for fools here bigtime
NPHET have reminded the government that our health service is still shyte and would not be able to cope with an uptick in case numbers, it just would not. We are an outlier in Europe because our health service is no better now than it was before all of this started.
We have a government of PR men and women and the tweeting head of the HSE is not in any way capable or experienced in public health despite being paid twice that of the head of the NHS.
All of this is related and relevant. Keep appointing and promoting incompetents and this is what happens.
Snouts in the trough and to hell with the consequences.
Yes. A year in, and nothing done.
not nothing, many livelihoods ruined, wemon and children battered, mental health shattered, sick untreated…but hey bike lanes
Sure it’s the best excuse ever to do F All
And what is Sinn Fein’s take on this? Maybe that NPHET’s proposals are absolutely outrageous and should have no place in our liberal democratic society? No. Sinn Féin health spokesperson, David Cullinane just wants to see more details of how the medical apartheid will work in practice before the party decides to back it. This aint no ‘party of the people’!
https://www.thejournal.ie/indoor-hospitality-leaders-questions-5480688-Jun2021/
‘Sinn Féin’s health spokesperson David Cullinane said the Taoiseach today announced that they government has no plan, stating that this comes down to leadership and planning.
He said he wants to be briefed by NPHET and see the plan from government before he would state whether his party backs the idea of only allowing fully vaccinated people to dine indoors and enjoy other indoor activities.
“..If it is not workable, then there’s a problem and the government have to demonstrate how its going to work,” said Cullinane.’
is Sinn Fein’s take that the government is being controlled by a shadowy unelected council of radicals?
*runs away*
Ok if you ever decide to come back for a grown-up conversation, I’ll be here
*waves goodbye into the distance*
No, if YOU decide to have a grown-up conversation I’LL be here.
There are, what, 40 or so ‘members’ of NPHET. All named in the first page of this. https://assets.gov.ie/136380/dafad75c-f942-46d8-a1ae-5f3f99a3e3dc.pdf
Time for a few journalists to start asking questions of these members. Questions like:
– How much input do you have in these meetings?
– Have you disagreed with any decisions?
– Were your opinions considered
– How long do NPHET meetings last?
etc.
etc.
The last journalist to challenge Holohan had her mic cut.
Ivermectin anyone ……
With a Oxypoxywoo chaser please.
Radio silence from Sinn Fein as per usual. Not a party of opposition, rather a part of.
Also Mary Lous sister is a lead in one of the pharmaceutical companies rolling out the vaccine. So why would they say a word?
Once the wind of public opinion changes enough for them to jump on the bandwagon they will. Their effort at optics voting against the last COVID law extension was for show, their absent members would have helped it not being extended. All prearranged and agreed, all for show, very little different from FFG.
I don’t like Alan Kelly.
But he’s dead right. This is discrimination. And in Ireland we don’t do discrimination, especially from the state.
Anyone supporting this has something wrong with them.
‘This is discrimination. And in Ireland we don’t do discrimination, ‘
To take your second point first – haha.
To take your first point second – no. It may be unfeasible, it may even be bananas, but it is not discrimination, it is a public health measure.
So young unvaccinated people who have already sacrificed so much, are now asked to work in an environment that is deemed “to only be safe if you are vaccinated”
And on top of that you can work as a “servant class”, waiting on us, but you can’t sit at our table and eat with us.
Jesus. And that’s not medical discrimination? Come off it
I might point out as a #covidsurvivor I fall into the category that can dine indoors, so I have no gripe there.
This comes from worry about the road we’re heading down.
You are way off on this one Nigel. You should just shut up now.
Nah, most of that’s incompetence, not discrimination, which is why it’s proabably unfeasible, and definitely unpopular. Service workers SHOULD have been prioritised. You shut up.
Right so, discriminatory practices, if deemed incompetent are somehow not discriminatory.
That’s some logic there.
Try that one in court and see how ya get on.
No, public health measures, if executed with incompeltence, look stupid. There us no discrimination, and the only victims are the people who haven’t been given vaccines yet.
“ the only victims are the people who haven’t been given vaccines yet.”
And those who can’t be vaccinated of course there Nidgey. ;)
Remember when you used to pretend to care about them.
Not so much now eh?
We have three categories here. People who can’t be vaccianted. People who haven’t been offered vaccination yet. People who refuse to be vaccinated. The first two categories deserve sympathy, support, consideration and protection. The latter category, not so much. The first two categories shoud be as inconvenienced as little as possible by any policies. The latter category made their choice, they can live with it.
Your fash is showing
I’m granting you the freedom to choose, that’s hardly fash. Demanding the choice and to be insulated from the consequences no matter what the costs to others? Now that’s fash.
Alan Kelly the drunk feely hands fella’s brother?
And so- let me see if I have this straight.
The person refusing you access can be unvaccinated.
The person serving you can be unvaccinated.
The entire staff of a pub or restaurant can be unvaccinated, and the only people who MUST be vaccinated- are those spending their money.
This is a whole new level of stupid- are they deliberately trying to bankrupt these businesses? Why is the government allowing this madness?
Well, what’s the alternative? Stay shut until everyone’s vaccinated – December? I don’t understand why restaurants & bars wouldn’t take 40%-and-rising-rapidly business right now. “Are they trying to bankrupt these businesses”? Surely the complete opposite – trying to let them open up.
