Thank Fionnouladh it’s Friday.
It’s that time of the week when the sacred warriors of the keyboard put down their weapons and feel the love all around us. Yes, it’s another music competition.
Prompted by reader Janet I Ate My Avatr‘s dismay at the kyboshing of the Dublin City Marathon this week, the theme today is: your favourite song to go long-distance running to.
Here’s mine.
Reply below to be in with a chance of bagging yourself a €50 Golden Discs voucher redeemable in any Golden Discs store.
The winner will be chosen by my fitness instructor.
Please leave a video link where possible, thanks.
Lines MUST close on Saturday at Midday.
Nick says: Good luck.
Last week’s winner: Lush!

Nice pace alright.
Forgotten that :)
Given that some (me) are lazy good for nothings, could we include best songs for a long drive? I only run if chased by bears.

You beat me to it! Great shout. Now I have to dig deeper in my tiny brain.
Sorry nicorigo I got beaten to the punch last week. It happens to the best of us.

Run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run
Run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run
You better make your face up in
Your favorite disguise
With your button down lips and your
Roller blind eyes
With your empty smile
And your hungry heart
Feel the bile rising from your guilty past
With your nerves in tatters
When the conch shell shatters
And the hammers batter
Down your door
You’d better run
great one

Thorn in my side, you know that’s all you ever were
A bundle of lies, you know that’s all that it was worth
I should have known better but I trusted you at first
I should have known better but I got what I deserved
To run away from you (Run, run, run, run) was all that I could do (Run, run, run, run)
To run away from you (Run, run, run, run) was all that I could do (Run, run, run, run)
To run away from you (Run, run, run, run) was all that I could do (Run, run, run, run)

I ride *snigger* too…. Road, trail and XC. Too old for enduro. I cannot, however, listen to music or anything else for that matter on a bike.
I used to ride but now my retinas are too tight to risk a bump
I don’t run. Ever. But if I HAD to run it’d be to this. Yello “The Race”. Nice 10 minute remix here

Frankie Goes To Hollywood – Maximum Joy
https://youtu.be/cbsMFv_ELH4
If I have a run then I want something that pushes me along. The rhythm of the song should propel the runner with an almost mechanical tempo. No better crew than the ZTT team lead by Trevor Horn to create something suitable. The end of the song mirrors the natural end of the run as you stand there panting, head down, hands on thighs, feeling better for it.
lead legs ? no probs, Midnight City to the rescue

I used to finish work about 3 am nothing better than running through the empty dark streets of Paris with my mutts to shake of the gabble of folks to some tough lady choooons Missy Elliott

Tina Arena – Vanina

You can switch to Runaway if your French falters.
This is one of my favourite running tracks. Harry Nilsson – Jump into the Fire
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfjNpgZ4C5Q&ab_channel=HarryNilssonVEVO
This one is good for a slow start and then burst into action when the drum beat drops in. It feels great!
Pink Floyd – One of these days (I’m going to chop you up into little pieces)

…strictly for modern roadrunners:

1972: Pure and simple every time!
I can get behind that
Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Fanfare For The Common Man
https://youtu.be/c2zurZig4L8
Overblown and pompous prog rock, however, it’s not a bad tune to run to. You need 70’s style bushy perm with headband and Alan Partridge shorts. Video filmed in one of the finest white elephant stadiums ever built, for the Montreal Olympics.
Another great one. If James Brown doesn’t motivate you, I don’t know what will!
James Brown – Superbad

I have a few different playlists as I can usually end up out for a couple of hors on a good day. In all my playlists there’s always one specific album always in the list.
Thunder, Lightning, Strike from The Go! Team.
It’s perhaps one of the most energizing records ever. And, I always start my run with the track Get It Together.
https://youtu.be/ht0yLJt7K4I
Just gets me in the mood for a long run.
There’s one other song that’s in all my running related playlists and that’s Dance Yrself Clean from LCD Soundsystem. When I’m hitting 10 miles and want to push on for more, that track gives me a boost that Red Bull wishes it could capture in a can.

Nice vid too… A “one shot” type thing, I think from that first viewing :)
OK not really relevant to the theme but so much to unpack here.

always thought this was a nice running in the rain track ( which is my favorite time to run, love sticking the head down into driving rain and wind and fighting it out )
Like the ribs of a broken umbrella,

my all time favorite to screech along to when the legs are on fire Bruce, I’m on fire

run to you by bryan adams. even has a warm up part at the start.
i however, would have hamstring knack by the middle 8.
https://youtu.be/P8JEm4d6Wu4
Insomnia, well it was always on my list but now it’s for reals
That’s just a great tune no matter what.
+1
always room for an emotional run, best cure for any break-up, sign up for a race, make a plan and cry your eyes out over your first few km, sure you’ll have forgotten why you cared by the time the endorphins hit, rewire your brain chemistry happy, Kate Bush, Running up that hill
https://youtu.be/wp43OdtAAkM
Belle and Sebastian – The Stars of Track & Field. Wistful pop meets indie heaven. The opening track form their classic breakthrough album “If Your Feeling Sinister” which would help soothe the loneliness of any long distance runner
“You liberated
A boy I never rated
And now he’s throwing discus
For Liverpool and Widnes”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRybFTKAhOc
sure you just bounce along to this atypical french rapper Nusky, Gabrielle Solis

Hasna – Marsoul el hob (Messenger of love)

sweet little song for the long and slow list, sometimes you have to dial it down and just get the time on the legs,

Technically a song about driving, but also good for an aul run and if you want to go the distance. ;)
Cake – The Distance

Running is quite a religious thing for me, got me out of a depression that lasted for my latter teens and most of my 20s, and helped me drop 40kg. It’s also religious in that I feel weird if I don’t do it, kinda like my mother having to go to mass, even in a country where she doesn’t speak the language.
Eminem’s lose yourself is a proven 20s per km pace increaser, in particular this verse, when you feel like giving up:
Gotten me to the point, I’m like a snail I’ve got
To formulate a plot or end up in jail or shot
Success is my only motherfuckin’ option, failure’s not
Mom, I love you, but this trailer’s got to go, I cannot grow old in Salem’s Lot
So here I go, is my shot
Feet, fail me not, this may be the only opportunity that I got
But, one of the best most emotional moments I’ve had running was during my second Dublin marathon. I was passing a DJ booth as he played Springsteen’s born to run, right at the oh! In this verse:
Oh, baby this town rips the bones from your back
It’s a death trap, it’s a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we’re young
‘Cause tramps like us, baby, we were born to run
I threw a fist up in the air and the cheer that erupted carried me for the 10 miles
But I prefer the Frankie goes to Hollywood version:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AMfE2Se4r9w
I hear ya, a year without running did nothing for my fuse.
CFCF – You Hear Colours
(set to footage of the film ‘The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner’
Vicarious long distance running is about as close as I get (am more of a bicycle person)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzi97vh-lgE
Long distance running is about running slow, especially starting slow, which is something that I’m learning and struggling with.
As such, I need music that is serene and so I choose classical. And my favourite piece is Clair de Lune by Debussy – must be a recording on two pianos like https://open.spotify.com/track/5u5aVJKjSMJr4zesMPz7bL?si=Dto6ZujmRhyhX2rocAO6Sg&utm_source=copy-link&dl_branch=1
btw Nick, love that Air track, brings me back to a different kind of session :)
“You gotta run, run, run, run, run
Take a drag or two…”
Runnin’ and smokin’. I’m liking the Velvet Underground’s take on this theme.
Run Run Run – https://youtu.be/lUP2OQap0-8
My favourite song to go running to is Highway Star by Deep Purple. A rollicking, thumping tune gets the adrenaline flowing. Does fast walking count?
https://youtu.be/UAKCR7kQMTQ
Calibans Dream from Underworld.
It’s a song specifically made for the running of the Olympic Torch into the stadium for the 2012 London Olympics. You can literally hear the pace of the footsteps throughout the song.

Rhythm with a sense of space, is something every runner can appreciate.
Kronos Quartet

My last word on the matter – no disrespect to those who run – maybe just a perspective thing.
