at

This afternoon

The Seanad sitting in Dail Eireann, Leinster House, Dublin 2.

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly addresses Senators in his native doublespeak on measures that will deny access to pubs and restaurants for the unvaxxed and in language.

Meanwhile..

UPDATE:

Senators have passed the measures 29 to 7 (with 24 Senators absent) and the bill will now be signed into law by President Higgins.

Or will he?

Yes, it’s definitely happening.

Or is it?

Stop that?

Nice phrasing Bodge but I’d have gone for –

    “ Oh Noes!

The Righteous Cleanchildren is being Hitlerated!!11!”

      1. Tony

Did Donnelly REALLY say “deny access to pubs and restaurants for the unvaxxed”

        Wow. I stand corrected so

  2. Nigel

If you don’t want to be differentiated because you’re not vaxxed, we’d better get back into complete lockdown until you are, I suppose. Which is what might happen if Higgins doesn’t sign it. So, yay?

    1. MR.T

How about you allow for people who test negative and dont have the virus to have equal rights to those vaccinated?

Yknow, like they do in the rest of Europe.

Or is common sense too common for you Nigel?
      Nigel only has middle-class sense

      1. Nigel

Me? Oh, very well: I, Nigel, hereby declare that people who test negative and don’t have the virus to have equal rights to those vaccinated.

Now print that out and get Pres Higgins to sign it and we’re sorted.

I think you’ll find that there are quite a few places where you cannot wander at will, for instance yourself and a few mates cannot meet on private property without the consent of the owner.

          2. Nigel

It might be a private residence and you’d be trespassing. It might be a place of work where you have no business. It might have an entry fee you can’t or won’t pay. It might be a hospital outside visiting hours. The reasons why you might be denied access to places are potentially endless.

There is a percentage of the population that cannot take the vaccine. What are the provision for this?

      1. Micko

        None. So far.

I have a family member in this situation. They’ve contacted their local FF TD and have been told that he’s going to contact Donnelly on their behalf.

        So I wouldn’t hold my breath… :(

        1. General Public

My nephew only has 1 kidney, he’s not able to take a vaccine either. This policy will further alienate him from children his own age and the community in general.

          1. SB

My wife only has 1 kidney and is fully vaxxed. What does the kidney have to do with it? Is it not more to do with his age?

      2. Nigel

Partly on the behalf of people who cannot take vaccines we have embarked on a programme of mass vaccination in order to achieve herd immunity across the whole population, thereby reducing the risk for those individuals. People who can’t get vaccinated might be more worried about the potentially disastrous effects of a premature reopening than of being excluded from certain activities during a partial reopening, but who knows?

    3. Zaccone

Someone whos tested negative within the previous 24 hours is statistically less likely to spread the virus than someone whos been vaccinated and is untested. Thats why the rest of Europe lets people with negative tests access venues.

Lets not get facts get in the way of Irish politicians decision making though I guess…

  3. Fearganainm

Splitting hairs seems to be at the mandatory but not compulsory phase at the moment.

This is it and has been since the start. I’m half vacced and have nothing against them but, like most, got it simply because there are too many threatened barriers in the way of those who aren’t.

          1. SOQ

It is up north Janet? Whatever about their squabbles among themselves, that one would just not fly with either side.

  4. John Smith

It makes all the difference in the world to know one is being differentiated against, not discriminated against…

  5. Micko

As was pointed out the other day, since Micheal Martin took power, there have been five amendments been made that give the government extraordinary “temporary” powers over the population.

Each of these havs a sunset clause, and every time the sunset clause has been due to expire they have been extended.

Does anyone actually think for one second that this new law is only for three months and won’t be extended?
And will other places such as supermarkets be added to the list – as we’ve seen in France.

      1. Micko

Jesus – this old chestnut – Again!!

        Are grannies vaccinated or not?

Are they safe now or not? Do the vaccines work or not?

Will you muppets make up your elfin minds!

Or we could just stay as we are so you can continue to work from home Cian?

          1. Micko

No, I said be happy to take around to that number of deaths so WE can go back to normal Cian.

            WE! Not me – WE.

Our society is in the toilet.

And I think that we have to grow up, put our big boy and girl pants on and accept that a certain number of people will die from Covid.

            Just as the US have.

Ye know – Just like we do with the flu… ;)

          2. Micko

            Also Cian

What are you, 8 years old?

“You said this…. You said that.. teacher teacher! Micko said he’s kill all the grannies”

            Grow up dude

I note a few Travellers online are basically saying “oh now discriminating against a group is bad.”

      1. Daisy Chainsaw

Travellers can’t change their ethnic status where as the unvaccinated can change their status to allow access quite easily.

  7. curmudgeon

Folks I am deeply saddened that the word discriminatory is purely seen as a negative.

Sadly it would appear as though no know bothers to think about what words actually mean anymore.

To be a discriminating person simply meant you had standards.

“Unfair discrimination” is the term you should be using e.g you can and should discriminate against candidates based on qualifications & ability, but not on ethnicity or sex.

Donnelly has to use doublespeak in this case because smooth brains automatically think discrimination = bad

The new rules are unworkable boopy doopers however.

    1. Micko

Hey. Thanks for the education curmudgeon.

Ye know what though, the term “Smooth Brains” is pretty offensive to people with a disability.

Lissencephaly it’s called – happens in the womb.

      Very sad stuff.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lissencephaly

But hey, now you know and you are educated and you know what THAT word means – I’m sure you’ll never use it again. ;-)

      Right?

      1. millie bobby brownie

You always have a smart answer, don’t you Micko? Always the last word.

  8. curmudgeon

“Smooth Brains is pretty offensive to people with a disability.”

Yes but its also offensive to those without one, who should know better. In a similar fashion being called a girl is not in itself an offensive statement, unless you aren’t one.

Sometimes people don’t mean to offend. This wasn’t one of those times.
