…err…representative democracy…the tories won the last election in UK with a comprehensive majority and all polls show they maintain their lead over the opposition…

It’s even worse for them now Nandos has temporarily closed due to a shortage of piri piri chicken. You seriously couldn’t make it up.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this before – the tragic death of Roy Butler, Waterford FC player, at the age of 23. Irish media reported on it yesterday the 18th, saying it was due to a “short illness” and no further information. However, on the 17th, his aunt Marian Harte had posted to Twitter:

    https://twitter.com/MarianHarte1/status/1427528448730411031
“My 23 year old nephew is fighting for his life at the minute….got the poison on Friday, please pray for him”.

By the 18th she posted “My beautiful nephew Roy Butler , Waterford city Éire passed away today , after the miracle “jab”…..I’m heartbroken and so so angry”

I always liked the raining men personally, I always imagined them falling arse first in the birthday suit

I have always enjoyed “Pretty Person” by Roy Orbison, or “When a Person loves a person” by Percy Sledge myself.

More than 100 guards at the British embassy in Kabul have been told they are not eligible for UK government protection because they were hired through an outsourced contractor, the Guardian has learned. Most of the 125-strong team of security personnel, employed by the global security firm GardaWorld, have been given informal notice that they no longer have jobs guarding the embassy, several said. The guards, some of whom had been working for the UK embassy for over a decade, described feeling abandoned by British officials and their employer. Many have been forced into hiding…..

what now, wait a minute, GardaWorld?!

    they’re hiring apparently

Leaky thinks he has hit upon some new vote-gathering method. Making working from home a legal right/choice. Kite flying at its most ridiculous. He must really miss Concannon’ daily briefs.

    1. Bitnboxy

Ya twit GiggidyGums. Leo may have no choice. The right to request remote working is due to be legislated for at EU level (Directive) which Ireland will have to transpose.

You are just ticked off that you will still have to haul your sad derrière to the port for those night shifts. There are objective grounds to make sure your sad derrière is under the watchful eye of a supervisor. Life is sweet!

      1. Man On Fire

So Leo is jumping the gun, the chances of that being looked at before this day next year are fairly slim.

        Who’s the twit now..

Looks like Boris’ reopening has been vindicated – the alternative is in full effect here in ireland and it looks like we may not reopen fully until Spring 2022. This despite almost the highest vaccination rate in the world!

“If not now, when?” has become “not now” in good old Ireland, the bestest boys in the class

  6. Mr T

The current country of Ireland is made up of those who stayed – not those who emigrated.
Those who emigrated are part of USA, UK, Australia, Canada.

Republic of Ireland is not and never has been, a nation of emigrants. The emigrants left, they dont live here any more. We are the ones who stayed and built this country up.

    1. eamonn

      simplistic view my friend.
“We are the ones who stayed and built this country up”.
Well done you, no funds back from overseas, no one returning with ideas/money.
Nobody taking the pressure off meagre resources by leaving to fend for themselves…..
Last time I looked this country is still sending young people overseas, by accident or design.

That is pretty pathetic alright. But then the Journal was never really anything more than an ad site that uses recycled news articles to push page views. Nothing more.

Still, it does have some funny comments at times but I never post there myself.

      1. Charlie

Nor I. The comments can occasionally be funny but for all the wrong reasons. Anything too controversial is immediately given the ‘Comments closed’ treatment. I can never understand how some of their so called journalists regularly get invited on to radio and tv shows for “expert” opinions. They’re appalling and the only time something half interesting pops up is when some outsider writes a piece.

        1. ian-oG

Yep, a few of the long reads can be worth the time alright but generally its just a skimming of stuff you can get elsewhere with more detail.

I can appreciate the skill and tradition, but it’s a fine line between this and american beauty pageants for kids.
