Davey Long – Last Train To Tupelo

Elvis has re-entered the building.

Davey Long (top) pays homage to the King of Rock’n’Roll on his new single.

The press blurb says:

“Last Train To Tupelo was inspired by Peter Guralnick’s definitive biography of Elvis. The song depicts Elvis on a Mississippi-bound train, headed back to his birthplace. It features a guitar solo and a piano solo and a percussion section.”

Nick says: From Ireland to Graceland.

Allow me to say that Peter Guralnick’s two-book biography of Elvis is stunning. Expansive, superbly detailed and impeccably researched involving those who knew him.

Even if you’ve no interest in the man and his music, it is a fascinating portrait of a life lived in and out (the fallow, Colonel imposed years where he churned out rubbish movie after rubbish movie) of the spotlight. Another “Rock ‘n’ Roll suicide” in a long list of tragedies. I was taken aback to read that in the 60’s Elvis fell off everyone’s radar. So much so that when the first night of the two night comeback special in 1968 was being filmed the organisers had to drag people in off the streets to fill the empty seats. After the first night, once word got out that he was back with a bang, they were queuing round the block to get in to see him.

The King is dead, long live The King …

Agree the Elvis book is a brilliant read, two doorstoppers, but riveting. That song is pretty good as well!
