This morning.

Dublin Castle, Dublin 2.

Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications and Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan (top) and Taoiseach Micheál Martin (above) arrive for a cabinet meeting to sign off on the Government Climate Action plan which will…

…aim to have almost one million electric vehicles in operation in Ireland by 2030.

The plan going to Cabinet this morning seeks to chart a course for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 51% by the end of the decade.

It will identify the public service as a driver of change and all new vehicles purchased by the State from the end of next year will have to be electric where possible.

It also envisages that there will be half a million more daily journeys completed by either walking, cycling or on public transport by 2030.

is there any study that weighs up the environmental impact associated with the push for rapid implementation of electric cars Vs. a slower roll out that allows us make the most of embodied energy in petrol and diesel cars?

the mining, manufacturing, painting, shipping of new electric cars is very harmful on the planet and much of the electricity used to run them is still coming from fossil fired power plants.

If you have any doubts as to the motivation for these radical changes, it is this:
Times of radical change are great opportunities to make money – not for the average joe, but for investors. But instead of waiting for a radical market change to happen (2008 for example) they now look to force it. Force the narrative that we need to act or the earths temperature will rise and burn us all (despite no rises being detected for the last 15+ years?)

Its all about money – people selling green painted shit look to make a fortune here, owners of natural resources like lithium and magnesium are creaming themselves with the increased demand. It was never about the climate – if it were, we would be tackling actual pollution (sewage, plastic, landfill etc)

One million electric vehicles in operation in Ireland by 2030. I assume they are going to offer huge grants beyond what they are currently offering which puts the price of car at €20,000 or more, and plan on ensuring all garages have recharging stations. Have never owned a new car and second-hand electrics just don’t seem to be a runner at all due the battery issues.

There were about 10,000 electric cars sold in Ireland in 2020. And 8000 in January->August of this year, about 1,000 a month.

To hit 1 million electric cars in use by 2030 we’d need to be selling ten times that number, approx 10,000 electric cars a month. Starting in two months time.

      That seems…unlikely.

Out of interest, is that number fully electric or does it include hybrids? Why is it so low do you think?
