Win Nick’s Esteem [Extended]

at

Thank Fidelma it’s Friday.

The crowd’s all here so let’s do another (sadly) voucher-less Friday music gabfest, shall we?

I’m almost afraid to choose a theme in case some pedantic alert reader (you know who you are!) pipes up that I chose the same theme on (insert exact date and year and link to previous BS comp from the mists of time).

But I shall not be deterred! This week, I want to know: what’s your favourite song to listen to before you go to sleep?

Here’s mine.

Please include video link if possible.

Lines must close at Midday Saturday.

Nick says: Good luck!

Meanwhile…

The results are in.

Last week, my esteem was won by Capernosity & Function who chose as his favourite winter song In The Bleak Midwinter.

“This version is from Carols at King’s College, Cambridge. This is the epitome of the High Church Anglican hymn in the classic Church of England Christmas setting. Winter is my favourite season and this song evokes those images of the barren trees surrounding the ancient church amidst a graveyard of faded headstones tinged with frost. Lovely.”

Nick says: Thanks to all who entered.

Meanwhile…

It nearly got away.

And three weeks ago (long story!!), my esteem was won by Otis Blue whose favourite song about travel was Wide Open Road by The Triffids (above).

Otis wrote:

“The quintessential Aussie road trip song.”

Nick says: Thanks Otis.

I guess mine has to be I Just Can’t help Believin’. BJ Thomas’ version is my favourite.

A wonderfully funny film with Alan Rickman and Bill Nighy about rival hairdressers called Blow Dry has a version of this song being ‘sung’ by an Elvis impersonator. I recommend the film for a good chuckle

“He’s drilling through the Spiritus Sanctus tonight
    Through the dark hip falls
    Screaming, “Oh, you mambos
Kill me and kill me and kill me”
    If I jerk the handle
    You’ll die in your dreams
If I jerk the handle, jerk the handle
You’ll thrill me and thrill me and thrill me.”

I also suffer with severe misophonia, so I can empathise, I can’t be in the same room as a ticking clock; welcome to the OCD Club :(

nice to know there’s a name for it, eases the guilt at my perceived intolerance.

        alright Clampers !?!
true enough, those ‘after-hours’ shenanigans were often glowing

Groove Armada – At The River

I brought this CD on my travels back at the turn of the century. It survived the trip intact and helped me nod off on many occasions in Southern Hemisphere hostels of varying quality.

I can’t fall asleep to music, I get to into it and end up spending hours going down rabbit holes of glorious sound even having a little vertical boogie if something gets you in it’s grip,
who am I fooling I never sleep these days anyway,
but once upon a time I liked to dose off to nice History Extra Podcast.

    1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

there’s something about her proper English accent that sends me right off and the lovely classical music between bits,
      I know the guilt

    1. galaxiapolizia

congrats on scoopin’ the win (again!) with The Triffids, Otis…
      (i’m guessin’ you’re au-fait with a certain 1989

Emmm… BS, what happened to Peder B. Helland’s Soothing Relaxation ‘Flying’ composition I suggested?

No bother, beautiful piece of music though.

    1. galaxiapolizia

yes indeedy, S.P, i thought it was incorrigible hamster-Munchkins
dancing French can-cans all over my keyboard… but, no…!
t’was my replys vanishing mysteriously into the ether… lost cajolings
proffering soothing sounds and sweet sonic charms
to still and becalm the savage sniping… to soothe the spill-over snippiness
      that hit surge-capacity on-here earlier… oh, well…
peace appears to have broken-out now, while the world sleeps.

      it’s a beautiful morning, it’s a new day…
      go easy, everybody…

I am not sure why this comes to mind now, but I have a wonderful memory of when I was a wee one. Before we moved to the great town I live in now all of us boys shared a room. Army bunks, with the youngest (including me) end to end in an effort to give everyone a bed.

My cousin occasionally took the Honda 50 from Cork to come up see us, and was an incredible musician. I have images of her cruising up the N9 with a guitar strapped to her back, her sister holding point as wingman.

Beautiful voice, and occasionally she would attempt to sing us to sleep. The one I remember best is Nobody’s Child. I only recently found out that The Travelling Wilburys did a version, which is the one linked. But the version for me was First Cousin Slightly on guitar, live in my bedroom
