Win Nick’s Esteem [Erweitert]

at

Thank Fritz it’s Friday.

In support of our beleaguered brothers and sisters in Austria, this week I want to know: what’s your favourite song sung in German?

Here’s mine.

Alas, there’s still no voucher – but them’s the breaks.

Please include video links if possible.

Lines close Midnight SUNDAY.

Nick says: Good luck.

Meanwhile…

Last week my esteem was won by Will for his choice of song about the ocean.

Will wrote:

“Tom Waits’ All The World Is Green from the album Blood Money. Containing the most delicious key change with marimba and bass clarinet solo.

“The gorgeous lyrics: ‘I fell into the ocean, when you became my wife; risked it all against the sea, to have a better life’.”

Nick says
: Thanks Will and to everyone who entered.

      Top one, M…!
Motorhead did a creditable cover, as did Blondie (almost).
tho the 1977 original is streets ahead.
      Sounds like a winner…!

I am picking some emotional ones tonight. Blixa Bargeld and the boys perform this in a way that it could only have grace and meaning. That Teutonic stillness.

Erika by the 39th Panzer Grenadier Division of the Wehrmacht. You can almost smell the gasoline from the Panzers going over the Polish border. Maybe the ECJ should adopt it as an anthem ?
I once played this in French class & the flag turned white as it was the theme for the 1940 Tour de France..
Hearing it is as joyful coming home to a full mousetrap or asking an Argentinian great grandfather his SS rank. Just don’t ask him to design a summer camp for the kids. Stick it on when your running a marathon & you’ll be the be in the master race or when your eating Luftwaffles for breakfast. Yes truly the tune for those who regard the former East Germany as middle Germany. It inspired the Ramones to write Blitzkrieg Bop

      Grow up stephen.
The 2nd World War was over before you were born.

This thread is about German MUSIC.
CAN, Kraftwerk, UFO and Boney M, etc…

UFO are from London. Saw them in the National Stadium aeons ago ? I assume you are referring to or the Scorpions or MSG. Boney M are from Jamaica , Aruba & Montserrat ?

Rather scarily my third class teacher made us learn this as gaeilge! There was a class of 40 (seriously) 8 year olds belting out “Erika!” every day for two weeks! We even used to listen to the German version blared out by a military band (on vinyl) to help. Ah, the eighties… Great times.
