This afternoon.
Dublin Castle, Dublin 2.
Housing minister Darragh O’ Brien outlines the government’s mica redress scheme which will be capped at €420,000. Homeowners will be able to receive €145 per square foot on the first 1,000 feet of a property. The total budget
Grants To be Capped At 420,000 In Mica Redress Scheme (RTÉ)
Meanwhile…
ALOT of confusion out there regarding the 420k cap being reported
Please note: there is 2️⃣ caps
1️⃣ An absolute cap (420k)
2️⃣ A sq/ft (138 being reported 👎)The sq/ft cap is what will determine how much homeowners will have to rebuild
E.g A 2000 sq/ft house * 138 = €276k

This sq/ft cap therefore needs to be updated regularly to reflect up to date market values.
It must be index linked
Otherwise, as time progresses and costs increase, homeowners will be left with larger shortfalls

Fupp the cap.
Insane stuff. It would drive me gaga if I actually paid any tax.
Why is there a magical money tree for these people and yet F-all available to tackle homelessness?
I agree
All the companies involved are still trading and in order to trade you must have insurance
So why have the insurance companies been made pay out also the companies
But as usual our taxes are a free for all
A good day for people of Donegal, a bad day for the other 25 counties in this state.
The taxpayer is being screwed over again; €420,000 to build what, a stadium?
Already individuals have been in the media saying that their 700 square metre house cost €1 million to build, and they want full compensation.
If there was the prospect of proper regulation emerging out of this, to prevent re-occurance, that would be something positive. But there’s little hope of that.
Does this also apply to people whose holiday / 2nd homes are impacted by Mica?
If so then I have an issue with footing the bill for peoples investment properties.
Why are they using feet? Ireland went metric a long time ago.
Bog brained morons from Donegal.
They’re never happy, what’s it going to take, 5 million each maybe, is that enough?
The companies who made these blocks and are responsible for the whole situation are still out there trading…
Plus – when they produced the product, they would have to have had insurance. Claims against the insurance that was in force at the time of production should be possible?
(as in – if I crashed into another car 4 years ago, and it came to court only now, the motor insurance policy I had 4 years ago would be claimed against)
I agree my point exactly George
All the companies involved are still trading and in order to trade you must have insurance
So why have the insurance companies been made pay out also the companies
But as usual our taxes are a free for all
Remember the banking crash and the auditors who were negligent and the result the crash
Again they got away with it
Then the settlements in court for medical negligence
All insured many doctors paying upwards of €50 grand for malpractice
Again the taxpayer and no heads roll
In all honesty who will be paying for this and how the hell will they get the money ?
The money tree of course
Taking the mica.
An oldie but a goodie
I don’t understand why the block maker is not on the hook for this
