This morning.
Via RTÉ News:
Non-Irish EU citizens living in the Republic will have to apply online for pre-travel clearance from the UK in order to cross the border on the island of Ireland, under proposed new British immigration laws.
Under the Nationality and Borders Bill, they will be required to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the UK, including when crossing into Northern Ireland.
The Bill has cleared the House of Commons and now heads to the House of Lords.
Meanwhile…
Yesterday #UK commons passed a bill that would make it illegal for a non-#EU citizen living in Letterkenny (🇮🇪) to drive direct to Dublin (🇮🇪) without applying for a UK visa! @Andrew_Adonis & other Lords stop this madness!@vonderleyen @MichealMartinTD https://t.co/lWZe3MYkSP pic.twitter.com/lPKE3lMj5x

Non-Irish EU citizens need travel clearance to cross border under UK plan (RTÉ)

so, will there be border infrastructure in place to police this?
and if so, is that not contrary to both the GFA and withdrawal agreement?
That’ll be great craic on some of the Cavan/Monaghan roads. Half a mile in the North, 2k in the Republic, another mile in the North all on the same stretch of road! I can’t imagine the tories will want to pay for all those border guards.
That is the point
I doubt it will be from the UK
It will have to be the EU
The UK are out of the EU we are not
By the GFA gives Irish citizens both north and south east and west an exception
Of which we agree
If the EU wants to enforce this then let the EU take the blame for the ructions that will happen on this island
We need representatives in Europe to fight our corner not the calibre of our MEPs like Wallace and grommet and maraid mc Guinness who have sold us down the line
This is really clever from the Brits when you think about it.
i like kittens
Another limp point scoring exercise by Dimwit Uplands and his tuppeny ha’penny cabinet of incompetents. What WILL they get up to next? Poor old Blighty…;(
A master stroke
Seems many are waking up to the fact we are piggy in the middle and our government are powerless simply because they are gutless and do not care about our people
Just their pensions perks and salaries
We got just 900 million from the 26 billion covid package from the EU a pittance and 1.5 billion from the brexit transition fund
The nation most hit by brexit
Again a pittance
Our interest rates the second highest to Greece and the massive turd sandwich we had to swallow from the troika after the crash
And BSM we are members of the EU
The correct figure for the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund is actually €750bn; Ireland’s share of which is €1bn.
Every day they juggle that grenade a little higher.
They are never not at it
Indeed, they just can’t help themselves…
Why bother putting something into law, that they know is clearly unworkable and unenforceable, it’s literally like a sketch from Yes Minister.
It is basically making it more difficult for EU migrants to enter the UK. The most likely point where it will be enforced is when travelling to Britain.
It will also probably be required to claim benefits or other state body interactions in NI.
Also the EU are introducing the very same visa waiver system for some third countries – i.e. UK citizens will soon have to do the same when travelling to EU mainland save RoI due to common travel area. “The EU has confirmed that British citizens will be eligible for ETIAS when it is launched at the end of 2022. This means that UK nationals will not need a visa for short stays in Europe after Brexit but an ETIAS visa waiver will be required each time”.
I’ll bet the EU one gets up and running well before Bojo’s.
Isn’t this just the same as the ETIAS system being implemented by the European Union across the board next year? By the end of 2022, all visitors that currently do not need a visa to enter Europe will be expected to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization. It only applies to the 26 Etias countries – the UK & Ireland are not part of the 26, hence the exemption for Irish nationals.
Why not just ask for estas to leave the island ? ULSTER SAYS NO!
“living in Letterkenny”.
An underlying cause in itself.
the idea that there’s borders in 2021 is insane
I wonder will my children get to play spot the sniper like myself and my brothers did as children in the 80’s crossing the border – good times … oh wait …
