Members of the Travelling community gathered outside Leinster House to mark International Human Rights Day, and to hand in a petition to  Taoiseach Micheál Martin to take ‘immediate action to address the mental health crisis being experienced by the Traveller community and the denial of Human rights and Institutionalised racism’.

    If you tell people they are victims they will always plead helplessness. There’s an industry now in keeping it that way.

      Absolutely. Couldn’t agree more. That said everyone deserves their share. I still don’t think travelers get anywhere near a fair crack of the whip. They were marginalised by middle society many moons ago. They need to be brought back in. They’re not alone in claiming infinite victim status though. It’s the done thing. With equality comes accountability. Easily side stepped when you’re discriminated against. Why give that up! Anyway.

      If you tell people they can’t point out how they’re being victimised because they are… doing something wrong, somehow in doing so, not sure how, the very act of speaking up is the opposite of helplessness, but ok, if you tell them they can’t speak up, then you are rendering them helpless.

    I was there, it was a lovely gathering finishing with a lovely sing-song which did the spirits good. Nobody came out to reception their open letter, what a lack of caring from the gang inside the gates.
