We Are Not An Elite Upper-Class Cabal

Yesterday evening.

Government Buildings, Dublin 2.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar and Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan launching the ‘Housing For All’ 2021 progress report.

Via BreakingNews:

The Government said that the latest data indicated that it will likely meet or exceed targets for new homes in 2022.

Responding to questions from reporters, Mr Martin also took the opportunity to reignite an increasingly personal row with the Sinn Fein front bench.

Mr Martin lashed out in particular at the privately educated Sinn Fein housing spokesperson Eoin O Broin, as well as accusing the party of serially blocking housing developments on ideological grounds.

There’s been very deliberative attempt by Sinn Fein to create a political narrative, in my view a fraudulent narrative, that members of the Government parties are some elite upper-class cabal who don’t understand the need for housing on the ground for ordinary people,” he said.

“It seems to be Sinn Fein is ruthlessly exploiting the housing crisis for electoral advantage.”

It’s completely incorrect to say they don’t understand the need for housing, the fact is that they simply don’t care.

      these people serve only themselves
leeches and ticks the lot of them

A “fraudulent narrative” – Martin would never indulge in such a thing atall, atall. (For 2 years.)

They have had 10yrs to build houses and we are still waiting. Do they think we are all stupid ?? Dont answer that

The can exceed their targets by 100% but that makes no difference to the electorate if international outfits can swoop in and buy the lot.

That situation is a two way sword of course, because at the first sign of a downturn, those same outfits will swoop out just as easily.

Starting your data off at the lowest point for house building in the last 60 years in Ireland, a complete statistically anomaly, is rather misleading. Some more illustrative figures you’re missing here are:

        1975: 26,892
        1980: 27,785
        2006: 93,419

Number of housing units estimated to be required per year in 2021 to meet demand, not even reduce it: 33,000

When Ireland was the poorest country in Western Europe, 50 years ago, with a population half of what we have now, we were building over 25% more houses per year than in 2019 or 2020

When Ireland was actually wealthy, but still had population significantly lower than now, we were building over 400% more houses per year than in 2019 or 2020.

And even with the current building “boom” we’re still building nowhere near enough to actually meet demand and reduce the price of housing. We’d need to be building 40,000+ per year to do that.

Not building enough homes is a deliberate policy pursued by FG for over a decade now to keep house prices increasing.

Thank you for providing some much needed context, together with the figures to back it up

It’s actually astonishing, isn’t it, how completely out of touch with reality they are? Jaw-dropping stuff. They still don’t realise that they are finished, completely. They have failed and failed and failed on housing, empirically and acutely, for decades, cheated an entire generation out of starting a proper life … they have made it worse over and over again and they try to pretend that people are angry because Sinn Féin made up a “narrative”? WTF!

Disappointing that this garners less than 20 comments whereas if it was some Covid BS all the usual suspects would be all over it. I suppose the bored middle-aged, middle class commenters on here have the privilege of not really caring about the housing crisis, do they? I guess crackpot Covid conspiracy theories are far more exciting on Bourgeois Sheet.
